What are you reading at the moment?

Short story collections are what I've been drawn towards in recent times - am most of the way through Thomas Morris' 'Open Up', having read his other collection a few years ago. His work is very Welsh, too.

I have never liked the man. He is highly opinionated and interrupts constantly and heatedly.
Reading the book is different. It's a monologue, so there is no argument or interruption.
I read beyond page 100 before I disagreed with him. Disagreeing is fine. If I wanted to read a book which agreed with me throughout, then I would have to write it myself and learn nothing from reading it.

John Stewart Mill, like John Locke, believed that only by listening to those with whom we vehemently disagree, and testing our own strongly held ideas against equally strong counter-arguments, can we ever hope to reach the truth.

I've downloaded the next set, so:-
Onto book #11.

The reverse journey from " the far side of the world" back to Blighty and Jack's waiting financial troubles and Stephens traitor.

Any description to lure us into reading it? I presume it's fiction.
Naval fiction centred around Nelson’s time. Good swashbuckling yarns but if you’re new to the genre then I’d start with good old C S Forester and his famous Hornblower series. Patrick O’Brian’s much-lauded Aubrey/Maturin series is the ultimate here in my opinion. Alexander Kent, Alaric Bond and Dewey Lambdin being notable others.

Have you read W W Jacobs? Yes, he wrote The Monkey's Paw, but most of his stories are about sailors. Entertaining.
