What are SLS's?

Evening all,
I was just browsing and noticed that some people don't like Proraso due to it containing SLS.

Why is this and what do SLS's do?

Cheers HM, it's a bit clearer now.

Right now my thinking is that even though a shaving soaps primary use isn't to clean, what's the harm in having these in the soap?
 
According to B&B they cause cancer, ingrown toenails and mumps. Along with red meat, hair dyes, foot powder, diet coke and the anti-gun lobby in the USA. See B&B for more details and to claim a free tinfoil hat.

And tallow doesn't cause 'mad cow' disease?
I did switch to Noxzema as a preshave. Medically proven that 1.69$ is better for you than 16.69$!!

Hmm... Tell me more about this tin foil hat. Will it protect me from being tracked by aliens?
