warm lather through the shave

Well heck, who wouldn't like that feeling of extra comfort temperature. Jeez, might as well make the most of lather making by adding a few extra perks to the mix....so to speak.

Glass or pottery versions are most common and no shortage of options available. Metal works quite well at conducting heat but they're tough to find.

Here's a quick hook....I mean bit of help in adding to the already decadent lathering experience. What's to lose?

Some shavings from a totally dried out tub of AOS rose absolute cream from about 10-15 years ago and the scuttle has already been filled with very hot water.

Added small amount hot water to the flakes and let it set a bit.

Shake out brush from it's water bath and load it with the mix.

Then either mix the lather and use from the bowl or get a good head start on face lathering, adding small amounts of water as needed.

I have other dried out rock like vintage creams and they all work fine.

Make sure the size is good, with mine being about 4 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/2 deep. Oh yeah, you want something with ridges or texture to help the process.

There's some beautiful pieces being made...some remind me of classy paper weights.

Oh, did I mention the warm lather through all the passes?

My curiosity is definitely piqued (I dislike cold lather)! An antique scuttle maybe? - let's see what's available on fleabay!

Excellent! I'd think there would be a bunch of choices on that site but never tried looking to see what's up. Yeah, warm lather definitely adds to the shaving experience and a scuttle's a good option that involves little if any new technique needed.

Who else besides me goes to a barber and enjoys that back of the neck shave more because of the higher lather temperature being applied. Why not do the same thing at home on your face or head? Plus the scuttle can be used as a mixing bowl for completed lather or also a good start for loading the brush for on the face finishing up.

I'd be curious to see what might be found to the various members liking. Gotta be a ton of wonderful toys.....I mean tools out there.

Thanks for the post and let's see what appeals to you. Remember to look for some with ridges or other texture to increase the ease of whipping something up.

Here's a suribachi style Steve Woodhead example as another texture option to check. Won't do a thing temperature wise of course but as a regular mixing bowl I'd guess that would be good for some members. Speaking of which, the suribachi is a very old bowl design made/sold specifically for 'enthusiastic hobbyists' as found on this forum. Yeah, there were about zero new pieces being marketed for shaving since that's not what they started out as at all. This is about 15 years back or a little longer.

Now it's different and jeeez, I bet not many here even use one like what's in the picture. Ok whatever. I mean why not make the lather process even more enjoyable at minimum expense, especially when figured over a 50 year period.? Prices and designs are all over the place if y'all look.
Ok a suribachi is a decent compromise instead of using something mundane.

I have some traditional scuttles eg by Wade, Lord Nelson, Floris / Ironstone. A pleasure to use them & I use them in a few different ways - sometimes with a puck on top, sometimes just to rest a loaded brush on top for hot lather, sometimes just for pressing in samples to load more easily with hot water within the scuttle and for brush dipping. Excellent to use during the UK winters in particular

I just face lather. Can’t be arsed with scuttles, bowls and like unless it’s somewhere I can stick a cake of soap on/in to store it. Waste of money, time and bathroom space. But that’s just me. Brush, soap, razor, blade and AS. Job jobbed.
Go ahead honey bunny, stop wearing that hair shirt and pamper yourself!

Nice Scotch song just for you:

After I have whisked up my lather, I leave it to set for a bit whilst I am showering.

To bring back the warmth to the lather I just run the bowl under the hot tap for a few seconds.
Sounds to me like you're ready for an upgrade in shaving pleasure. Where does the brush find a place with this method? Maybe standing up somewhere between uses or in the bowl somehow? Does it cool off for some reason? Just screwing with (not just you personally) but a general messing with anyone on the edge.

It's the little things like these that really add to what the object is here, which you can fill in your own blanks. Hah, the scuttle idea isn't a case of need, how's that? Face or bowl lathering, either way it's a warming option that works as a mixing bowl too.

Having a brush with some excess lather standing around between passes.....why even deal with that. Isn't one idea that makes the whole non cartridge thing popular are all the damn options available now! This isn't something for occasional use like switching razors or soaps or whatever. This is every day rotation material.

Completely unnecessary as @Gairdner days but good fun and very versatile in how they can be used. Also if you have a high boredom threshold and like variety then they’re a good purchase. Often found here in the UK for a few pounds in charity shops or online (especially the Wade ones)
