They are better for any lathering!
You see, synthetic fibers don't absorb the lather, and the brush is overall super efficient with soaps and creams. Meaning you also spend less time (and product) lathering. I used to struggle with face lathering too, while using my fancy badgers. Granted, some of it was due to a lack of experience, but once I picked up a synth, I haven't had any issues with lather since. I also use any hard soaps as shave sticks and face lather exclusively. Just think about it - why would you waste time creating lather in the bowl when you can do it straight on your mug, and get extra facial massage at the same time! And it makes you much more independent from extra gear.
Anyways, I think you should give it another go. Rub more product into your whiskers at first, if you must - but once you get a hang of it, there's no going back!
 
It's not something I do, but others do have success at grating their shave sticks into bowls.
 
I don't like telling people what to do but I want to share something which may help you to get better results with the shave sticks. First wet the tip of the shave stick(dip it in hot water and wait for about a minute max.) and then rub it on your beard, you should notice that it is very easy to apply the stick and when it dries, wet the tip of the stick again and carry on, also make sure your beard is wet as well. Then start making the lather with your brush. I hope it works for you.
