I am tempted to one of these

I broke my Muhle Mug today

I love it, but for the next three months I will be in Cyprus - with solar water heating hot water is in short supply early in the morning so I though a kettle filled mug trad mug might be worth a try.

My concern is he small top bowl - I do like a big bowl in which to swirl up a lather.

How will I fair with the trad pattern?

There are some modern double skinned scuttles made - are any available in UK at short notice?

I have a mug like the Connaught one, ornamental, but it's not in use. I rather like the little lathering bowl halfway down this page:

i have one of these you can have for cost of postage if you like

Thanks. If I were to stick with that pattern, I would just order on from Amazon. The shape is exactly right for me.

Back to the Victorian pattern - just a shallow bowl in the top to hold the soap.

So they were designed for use with a second lathering bowl, or for lathering on the face, were they?

I have always assumed so.
Remember these are from the days when the hot water was carried up from the kitchen in jugs.

What a find! I was walking down Sirley Hight St in Southampton and looked in the window of a Salvation Army charity shop. Staring back t me was not one but two traditional pattern shaving mugs for £2 a piece. If I like them I have one for my Southampton flat and another for the Nicosia bungalow. If not I can make them available on this forum to any that might like them.

My interest was stirred by the fact that I broke my Muhle Mug (the big one with the handle). I thought a Victorian pattern might be good when, first thing in the morning the solar heated water is not too hot and I will need to resort to kettle water.

Well I will have a go. But what a find!

I have a Wade victorian style shaving mug (10p charity shop bargain) and agree that they are only meant to hold a small soap on the top bowl and let the excess water drain back into the main bowl. I use mine to keep my lather bowl warm by filling it up to the max with very hot water (for lather bowl read sainsbury's clay pot), but I do like the look of that mug you broke..........will have to save my pennies.
Below is a pic of the top of my mug, the razor is my Rotbart which is the same size as my 34c to give you an idea of the bowl size.
