Shouldn't that be Father Christmas, this side of the pond?

Note that Santa Claus is a US adulteration of our Dutch SInterklaas (Saint Nicholas, former bishop of Myra in Turkey / Byzantium, patron saint of sailors; in Holland there is an old cult that portrays St Nick as childrens' friend, and the current Saint Nicholas legend, probably invented in the nineteenth century, has it that he lives in Spain, and comes to Holland (and Belgium) every year by boat to distribute presents on December 5 (or 6). December 6 is the alleged date Nicholas, bishop of Myra, died. It is unknown where the association with Spain comes from since he lived and died in modern day Turkey, and most of his relics are buried in Italy, after religious graverobbers lifted his remains from his burial place around Myra.).

Legend has it that the Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam imported Sinterklaas, and that the other inhabitants of the colony were quick (yeah, leave that to the children) to adopt this celebration.

Thanks Damian, tried this on my 4-year-old and he loved it. He was completely taken in, especially when FC said how good he'd been with his little brother. Nice one!
