There is also Herbert Johnson. I have used The Hat Shop in York and the English Hatter in Amstelveen. So it's Bates v Lock & Co; does anyone have any thoughts on the merits of both? They both look very good quality for the price.
If you're looking for a budget panama there is a retailer that goes by the name of Borges and Scott, they sell their seconds on e bay here:
Genuine Panama Hat (second from leading brand with small defect/mark) | eBay
Being a genuine Panama made from Toquilla Paja it will be far lighter, breathable and stylish than cheap copies made from cotton or paper (which all the cheap ones from China are). Sold in two options of colour (it's hard to distinguish them in the pictures).www.ebay.co.uk
I got one last summer and for the money i was quite impressed, obviously not up there with the best but for a summer/travelling hat absolutely fine.

Spot on, i've always been a 56 cm and that fitted fine, got one for my Dad and his is a good fit too.
I am sure the Christy Panama's at the York Hat Shop are not that much more expensive. If you're looking for a budget panama there is a retailer that goes by the name of Borges and Scott, they sell their seconds on e bay here:

Panama hats is such a fascinating subject. But where and when do most people actually wear their hats?
It's a real investment obtaining a good quality one and obviously one would not want it collecting dust c/w the occasional spray or mist stream to keep it subtle; so when and where do you wear it AND what reactions do you get when you wear it?
