The Rolls Blade is Done the same way Rob..One layer of tape keeps the Bevel to Suit the Rolls System..I really can't see any advantage in using a Rolls without the guard as opposed to using a straight. The advantage of a straight is that you can control angles more readily - the thought of having a blade at 90 degrees to a handle and then trying to establish the correct shave angle just seems weird.
As for sharpening on a hone - I too would be interested in how this is done. With a straight razor both edge and spine are flat on the hone and that establishes the correct bevel angle. How are you doing that with the Rolls blade?

I don't have a Slash Tool..I just use One layer of tape to Strop and Hone..I leave Wings hanging at the side to flip it Over..I have shown Pics of this if you look back on this Thread..Thanks for loads of great info @Fergiebilly
Lynn's videos are great as well as the threads you shared. Am considering a coticule or lapping film but have yet to decide.
So you use the SlashTool on the Rolls and the bayonete on the Heljestrand?
If not, how do you hold, guide and turn the blade when stropping and honing?
That's clever. I saw those wings but never thought they were for grabbing the blade from there to hone and strop. Pretty clever. As far as stropping a Heljestrand blade goes I use a Stropping Handle or a Magnus Auto Strop which I have also shown in this thread..There is no Handle for a Rolls blade so the Tape does the Job..Look back in this thread..The Intel is there..
Billy
That was a Thick Industrial Clear Tape I was using there..Folks usually use Electrical Tape..That's clever. I saw those wings but never thought they were for grabbing the blade from there to hone and strop. Pretty clever. Thanks again!
Wonderful bloom on your brush. Not the best shave unfortunately - a bit tuggy. View attachment 18232
Nice One Karl..A much better shave with the Nordic Beauty this morning.
After some consultation with @Billyfergie it became clear that I was keeping the angle too shallow, too flat to the face. And, I was probably adding too much pressure to get it to cut at a nearly flat angle. I wouldn't say today's shave was like skaters on ice, but it was way better than the last two. Whisker reduction was just within the range of acceptable on the first two passes but really good by the third. In fact, after some wet touch ups I finished with a mostly BBS. More practice is needed but I'm now feeling good about the road ahead.
