Just a quick post to ask for any tips for shaving the back of my neck on my own. I don’t shave my head other than with clippers and quite often get irritated by the growth of hair on the back of my neck especially when it gets caught on shirt collars etc.

Any tips for shaving this on your own?

Cheers
Mark

Hey Mark, sometimes I try to delay going to barber by clipping the hair on the back of my neck - I use scissors that came as part of a very cheap 'barber set'
Just trying to tidy it a bit when it's gone too long, so don't know if it's exactly the same as your scenario

The back of my neck gets a bit shaggy, so I've been shaving it for a few years now.

I use two mirrors - the main bathroom mirro and either that on a cabinet door on the other side of the bathroom.
This is mostly to check coverage and that I'm not reducing the hair line too much.
I often just use ordinary bath soap, as I require slickness and visibility.

I have a couple of moles there and they do bleed a fair bit when cut, so a cart or a mild, fairly low blade gap razor (close to neutral exposure) with an angle guide of some sort works best for me.

The reason why I like to use a razor with an angle guide (DE89, Merkur SB, Henson Al13, RR Daily etc.) is that I can let it find the angle by itself easily without exerting much control over the razor by holding the handle by the sides. Given it's a bit tricky for me even with two mirrors, it's quite a valuable feature for me.

I mostly use my DE razor or occasionally an SE razor and I don't have a mirror, muscle memory and feel are your guide. Or use a cartridge initially until you get the feel for it.
ditto...muscle memory and shaving confidence is the key...recently I've been using the Gillette guard or a pivoting head cartridge razor which works for me.

Thanks for the kind replies all.

I’ve had a quick go using a KCG and it went fairly well. I think the hardest part was getting a good straight line. Hopefully, it’s just a practice issue. Tried using a mirror and then my phone to see what I had done but I worked just off feel when I did it. (y)

It could have been worse for sure - it wasn’t a great big diagonal slant anyways! :giggle:

I do a buzz cut using clippers then with 2 mirrors, I usemy Blackbird Vector to tidy up.

I find it's easier to get a straighter line with the wider blade.

My hair is cut so short that you can't really notice if it goes a bit wonky.
