Shaving journey thus far.

So with an eye to a long anticipated holiday, I’ve been thinking about how to condense down my DE shaving absolute necessities for foreign air travel.
Thus far, the list goes like this;
Spooned out Proraso pre shave cream into a small pot scrounged from my wife.
Proraso toothpaste tube shaving cream - I’ve got it so I’m going to use it!
Razor + blade
Brush
Aftershave balm - will decant into another scrounged make up jar.
Alum block - still looking for a small container for that
I have a feeling the bathroom shelf space may need some negotiation - it used to be toothbrush, disposable razor, shave foam, roll on.

Do you experienced DE folk do something similar? Any tips or words of wisdom gratefully received.

I've never owned alum.

I do quite the opposite ...

I'm going on holiday. I used to pack a favoured disposable format and a travel can of shave gel ... but now I tend to just go and buy whatever I can find there. There's always a Gillette Blue II or a BIC and a can of foam. Shave, wash off and get about your day ... or enjoy your day, shave, wash off and get to bed.

Take a break and enjoy the break. Don't stress about it.

What I do like to take now that I've found such a thing exists is Turkish Cologne, particularly if I'm travelling to a warm place ... but a spritz of freshness throughout the day and doubling up as aftershave if that's something I wanted. Perfect!

It comes in all sorts of scents - Lemon is probably most popular, but there's Tobacco Flower and Olive Blossom.

Depends on where I'm going, what I'm doing and how long I'm away for. Most of the time I travel light so might just take one of two decent disposable razors and a small tube of shaving gel. I can carry these in hand luggage if necessary and don't risk damaging or losing any of my good stuff. I don't tend to bother with a brush or shaving specific aftercare products. I would of course carry some antiperspirant \ deodorant, something to make me smell nice and a general moisturiser or after-sun product.

Oddly enough, the Turkish Lemon cologne was a thing I discovered when travelling in Turkey in the 80’s. On the bus - without A/C, only windows and roof vents open and the conductor would have a large bottle of the Lemon cologne, each passenger would cup their hands together and then he’d pour some in - you’d splash it all over and have a momentary cooling effect with the liquid evaporation. It also helped mask the smell of perspiration.
Liked the stuff so much, would always bring bottles back home with me.

I get that - my DE shave journey is fairly new and very much at the enjoyment stage.
I made the holiday kit post, because I want to continue that enjoyment whilst away and wondered what like minded people did to facilitate that.
Oddly enough, when I’m away, I always shave in the evening before going out for food, when I’m back in the UK I shave in the morning before breakfast.
On my next holiday, I’ll probably continue with the time shift and take a pared down DE kit and just see how it goes. There’s nothing quite like learning from experience as you go along.

Use your aftershave balm as pre-shave OR use hair conditioner from the hotel room OR lather up and leave it on face for a few mins while you get the other shave stuff ready.

King C Gillette DE Razor (often discounted down to only £10) + a couple of half tucks of different blades. Also a Gillette Fusion (depends how the sunburn / alcohol is doing and how enthusiastic i am feeling about shaving.

I take a small 22mm synthetic Yaqi brush which fits inside inside an old TOBS tub, which doubles as a lathering bowl

A hotel i used to stay in regularly had small, matchbox sized plastic box's containing a complimentary shoe shining sponge and I found the Osma Bloc 75g Alum block fits in exactly (y)

Get a hanging wash bag for the shower screen / bathroom door and a Dopp bag that opens with a wide mouth for your shaving kit - it can be zipped up and stored anywhere once you have shaved. I tend to stick mine on the floor under the sink drain pipe in Hotel rooms, when not in use.

Take a flannel / hand towel. Use as pre-shave hot towel and / or wiping typical Hotel bathroom mirrors that are all steamed up from the shower you just had.

Proraso Shave Cut Healing Gel - Fantastic stuff - only £3 for a tiny tube, a small dab works almost instantly to stop a cut from bleeding and it works miracles if you get a non-stop cut when shaving before going out for the day / going out for dinner.

Trust me it protects your Marriage "Own Fault" no-claims bonus :ROFLMAO:
 
Thanks @Zorro for a really helpful real world take on travel DE shaving and.
It also made me find the Abbreviations thread to look up TOBS.
Currently looking for cylindrical things around the house to protect my shave brush. Saw a post where a toilet roll tube was used, so E got one on standby in lieu of a TOBS container.
Really like the hanging wash bag idea and the Proraso Shave Cut Healing Gel, both items weren’t even on my radar.
 
Depending of course on where you are holidaying, and how you are getting there, a toilet roll is a very good thing to take with you. You don't need a new one but a half used roll gives a bit of protection to a brush and you never know when a few sheets might come in useful.
 
Starting to realise some preferences for this DE shaving journey. I know it’s all based on personal choice and know that we are all shaped by so many personal variables and preferences. For example, having protruding tabs on the head of the razor is a definite no for me. Those tabs always seem to catch around my nose when I go in for removing my beard growth that seems to grow right up into the crease of my face / nostrils

I would definitely like a brush with a longer handle. My Proraso/Omega bristle has a generous handle size of about 60mm, but my sausage fingers still seem to get plastered in slippery lather. A 20mm longer handle could be ideal.

Saw some beautiful longer handled brushes (vintage) posted by @TobyC and new beauties by @gile.
I wonder how stable they are when put to sit up vertically laden with dense creamy foam? I guess with them being top heavy and having a smaller footprint, this may affect their stability - I don’t know, that’s why I’m mentioning it here..
Haven’t seen many of this style for sale in the U.K, aside from EBay where the listings are usually in the U.S.
What product is used to keep the wood in good shape?
