Thank you Martin for a lovely detailed report. After the usual 1-2 minute hot towel prep:
vintage rebranded Simpson (Marshall Fields) witha nice old knot
1958 Executive/Gillette Spoiler NOS 1981
older Coates rose cream from a tube
Lucky Tiger AS and Face Tonic
AOS 'Sandalwood/Cedar' EdT
This is special brush to me in that it was my first very nice one, after a number of years being happy with others a bit less wonderful but still fine for my own use. Was found at an estate sale inna very ritzy neighborhood in Illinois and looked to be unused with the box. Heh, to show you the kind of area this sale was in, the town is named Golf. Yep, as in the sport.
Originally the handle was very light but over the years of exposure to other shaving crap it's turned a decent butterscotch. I will include a before and current pic.
Used it yesterday and today and since Feb 2010 I musta got this thing wet at least 1000 times and it's still working fine. Loses a hair maybe twice a year and that's it. Sheesh, enough already.
Tried a Spoiler blade from 1981 today, hoping they were like all the earlier year ones and yep, it shaves like a Spoiler thank God. Loaded one in a favorite 59 year old razor and had an excellent time.
BBS results,
Martin
Oh, I can't include a current pic for some reason.

The first use of my most recent acquisition, the MicroMatic open comb. It was superb - a really close but comfortable shave. It's quite a small razor - in my hands anyway - but it has real presence and heft. I guess that's due to the brass. It's beautifully engineered. I had enjoyed using the 1912 and Schick so much I thought to pick one of these up as well. Recently I'm getting the best shaves I have ever had - all factors considered - and I have to attribute this to discovering vintage SE razors. My prep and lathering hasn't suddenly massively improved and my post regime has been consistent for quite a while - so it isn't that. I wonder about the effect of the single edge blades? They are obviously thicker and therefore less flexible than DE blades - does that make the difference? I don't know. This style of razor and blade do work for me - I do know that. The MM is also a beautiful object - not something I'd say about the 1912 or Schick - I fully understand that others will disagree with this statement. Ha ha. So - job done. I seem to without realising it joined in with SEptember? I only have two open combs so OCtober might be more of an issue. Another shave without artisan products - and someone very kindly sent a tube of Indian Old Spice cream - so that's my next one to use. Enjoy your shaves one and all - yours - I.
@Blademonkey - thanks again P. for doing such a good refurbishment job on the razor. It's a keeper.
@Wayne Pritchard - so you got the other one mate? ha ha.
