replated vintage razors

a fat boy for that amount of cash, should be perfect finish wise, should have the original case in undamaged condition, should have the original paper work, the shpper as well
 
The damage is usually done by commercial plating shops not used to working with smaller items with fine detail. Razor detailing can be buffed to oblivion and plating applied far too thick, making the razor mechanism stick.

I don't think any of the guys offering restoration services via shaving forums would ruin a razor that wasn't already beyond help.

With regards the classic car analogy, it's all about attention to detail. A classic car that's faithfully restored to former glory is what it should be about. This is why a well restored Series 1 Land Rover will go for considerably more than one with chicken wire chassis and moss growing out of the windows.

I don't throw together anything. I use tools specially made to dismantle a razor (if required). Original plating is gently stripped using a chemical process and the razor is adjusted for blade gap etc before light polishing, chemical cleaning and final plating.

If plating is worn on a razor the razor surface will corrode, brass and copper reacts to soaps etc. and will pit over time. No amount of polishing or plating will make a corroded razor look good - better, but not good. Far better to have a good razor replated to give another 60 years of service than let it slowly die.

I only own one replated razor, a Fat Boy that was replated by @onotoman and it was transformed from a well worn but basically sound razor to one that looks like it is new. The plating is superb and it is obvious that the preparation that went before the plating was a key part to this. If you want a razor replated restoredrazors.com are definitely a good choice in my experience.
