Pre-Shave Wash Important

I get better results with just wetting the skin before shaving. maybe because I shower then shave so there is still some natural oil on my skin before it has been stripped away by soap. I shave my head so find it easier to shower to rinse all the soap off after the shave, rather than showering before. I might be imagining it but I think I get a better shave than if the hairs and skin have been softened first. maybe the hairs stand up a little more so are easier to shave? maybe the skin being tighter makes more of the hair exposed? that might cause ingrown hairs for some though.

Has been part of my routine for a few years now but recently saw some advice about washing the face after the shave as well, so have started doing that lately too. Well, it’s a good way to try and get rid of some face wash (but it just never seems to run out anyway).

I always shave after a shower. I’ve been using CereVe Hydrating Cleanser on my face and their SA Smoothing Cleanser on my head (I’m bald) for a while now. It works for me and isn’t too expensive if you buy the big bottles as it lasts a long time.

What about Palmolive's hand soap as a face wash? Must try it next time I have some. As a hand soap it (like the shaving cream tube) seems to perform away above expectations.

I only ever use olive oil based soaps.

Aleppo is the best for me. Also Dalan soaps, Palmolive or any of the Greek olive oil soaps.

Warm shower before shav. Lots of soapy lather on the beard.

Plus another good face wash after shaving as a moisturiser.

I opened the Wilkinson Sword 'Barber's Style' face wash a few months back, and always reach for it now, ahead of other options. Quite soft and light out of the tube and doesn't try to 'strip away' too much of anything. Could its performance be down to it being made by a shaving-centric brand and being formulated with shaving in mind - any of the Gillette face washes worth a try?

I often was my face with shampoo at the same time as I was my hair. Seems to do the trick. The Romney Marsh Wool Fat soap does a grand job too. I certainly agree that a good face wash in a hot shower before shaving is excellent nay, essential prep.
+1

Personally, sometimes I shower then shave, sometimes I just wash my face then shave.
Sometimes I have a nice shave, sometimes I don't.
I feel it has more to do with my mood and technique on the day than anything else.
Or maybe that's just me!
