There are some historic astringent lotions, but I can't quite recall. I know Myrsol does one.

See Breeze astringent...

I sometimes use aqueous cream as a prr-shave. Not seen anyone else use it and they probably know something I don't but it seems to help.
I think.
Maybe.

And I'm currently using captain Fawcett beard oils on the skin as post-shave. Again probably not what anyone else does or should so but leaves the skin feeling good

I’m a big fan of pre shave oils combined with a hot face wash before a shave.

I’ve mainly used TOBS sandalwood and the standard pre shave oil from T&H, which has a nice citrus scent to it. More recently I got hold of the shave oil from Refinery which you can apparently use for pre or post shave. I’m a big fan of the Refinery post shave balm and so had confidence that this would be good quality and thankfully I managed to get it on offer from Amazon. It had been sat for months before I first used it and wow it really is the business.

It has a lovely aromatic scent to it and works as well if not better to the other names mentioned above. If you like a pre shave oil you need a I get yourself this one if you get a chance.

A thorough face wash with warm water in the shower is my favoured prep. I often just use shampoo. Then it’s face lather with a good soap occasionally a cream then shave. Thorough cold water rinse afterwards then an alcohol based aftershave. A reasonably nourishing one like Pitralon Classic or either of the Proraso splashes.

Some of the artisan splashes are also excellent, particularly my favourite, P&B Spitfire and Signature Soaps deserve a mention too. A cream tea on a summer afternoon with test cricket on the radio and the rosy scent of Signature Soaps Coria lingering in the background - bliss.

I seldom need a balm and my recent experience with Proraso Green Pre wasn’t negative but neither did it bring much to the party. I found it very refreshing and pleasant on the face but did it do much? Not sure. Makes a nice balm too but again did my skin need it after the shave? Not really.

Proper prep, quality lather, decent alcohol splash and the job’s a good ‘un.

As always, others may find things completely different. Just my tuppence on the matter.

Pre-2025, didn't use much except post-shave balm.
Bought 6 or 8 shaving oils during the year so am going to work through them, but will I keep buying them after that... not really sure.
Found a facial tonic by Gruum a few weeks ago down the back of some wardrobe, it is really good as part of post-shave, I don't have to wonder if it's doing me any good, the skin feels refreshed right away.

I haven’t used any pre-shave for 4 years or more.
I came to the conclusion it didn’t really work.
I did buy a Fitjar Islands Pre shave pad that i really liked but i wouldn’t say it made my shave any better, it was just another product to use.
I also was making my own for a while but again when it was done it was done.
I’m not going to say it works or it doesn’t but it doesn’t really work for me
