Perma Sharp Super ( printed text )

Good question.

There's a general thought (yes, "thought") that there has been a dip in quality within the last few years and so the printed face is considered to be the good stuff. From the blade sharpness project over on B&B it does appear to be holding up as a thought, certainly in terms of sharpness.

That said, by way of discussion, I have pre-laser 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge and compared to a tuck of laser etched to find that I much prefer the laser etched for shaving with. I bought a hanger of laser etched. Empirically, the pre-laser are considerably sharper and the laser etched have dropped from PolSilver/Wizamet sharpness to Gillette 365 sharpness. Not a great drop in the grand scheme of things and still sharp enough.

The Feather black pack was a surprise over there.

  • NOTE: Feather Black and Yellow, blades are crafted with the same materials. The only difference lies in how they are packaged: black Feathers come in 5-blade packs while each yellow Feather pack includes 10 blades.
That was the consensus but apparently not when it came to testing.

Sure was ... which I'd flip the other way around and wonder if the yellow Feather was somehow inadvertently biased or whether it was just the rare really good one and the blacks are the standard. Dunno. Either way, I don't think Feather are magical - they are insanely sharp and you can expect two such shaves before a dip in performance.

The sharpness project has shown that if you want a sharp blade, there are others that a right up there with the Feathers for sharpness - the new AccuThrives and the Wilkinson Sword results don't come as a tremendous surprise, both seethingly sharp! Bruce Lee & Lord Cool came in right up there as well - both, I believe intentionally so rather than the odd good blade.

Don't forget the Perma-Sharp blades that he said were equally as sharp and I have to agree with @Bish I find them smoother than the Feather.
I didn't think I would geek out about blades but the thread is quite addictive.

Which Wilkinson Swords? I have German and vintage English ones.

i have both as well.the vintage brits are longer lasting..most likely better steel..like everything made today, cost cutting ,lesser quality steel, made to fail quicker, sells more blades..gillette spoilers vs modern blades ..

German, of course. The fellow tested a bunch, including some vintage - fun reading! Latest German is very sharp indeed and a quality blade indeed. The Schick from Edgewell tested very much the same, although no surprise. Since the Edgewell reconfiguration, Schick & Wilkinson Sword are the two main shaving brands shown on their website - since Personna name rights went to AccuTec, I do wonder whether Edgewell will continue with their very excellent Platinum Chrome ... or perhaps that's the grind that has wound up in their private labels bucket which we know cover Muhle, Solimo (Amazon) and then Boots, Sainsbury & Tesco supermarket own-brands.

This month, I'm doing a set of shaves with the Muhle, Solimo & Sainsbury back to back with current Wilkinson Sword and Personna Platinum Chrome to see if I can get a face-feel for similarites, or otherwise.
