I am not convinced that the drunk routines were always real, I suspect he played up his notoriety. His appearance on Aspel was either brilliant acting or brilliant entertaining whilst drunk ...the routine still makes the hairs stand up on my neck and I suspect this is why it was broadcast...I would have loved to have had a good drink with him...
I've had a few beers in the Valletta bar where Oliver departed. I was at Nottingham University in the seventies when he was filming in the area. I thought it was Women in Love but that was 5 years earlier.
