last thing I need is a big red nose

Lay off the booze, stop trying to blame oily skin!!

The best of it is I hardly drink, when I get an occasional nose like the horn off Chittychittybangbang, everyone assumes I've been imbibing, the more I protest the worse it sounds.

Oh! 'That car's' name was a pain in the arse to type.

Honk! honk!!!

Cheeky basket

Henk, are the ingredients readily available and what quantities would be required? Would they affect the cleaning properties in anyway?

Fozz

Yes, not much, and no.

For first experiments, I wouldn't bother with the humectants yet. Start with the isopropyl myristate or the 'synthetic spermaceti' (cetyl palmitate) and see how you like that. 5 to 10% seems a good point to start.

Henk,

I have sourced where i can buy isopropyl myristate. Do you mean for me to add 5-10% to my current brew minus the castor oil?

No, keep the castor oil, but add a little isopropyl myristate. Start with 1-2% and try how that feels. Then up it and keep testing it. You may need to heat the oils to mix it well and get it dissolved.

Sounds good, thanks Henk.

i hope i do not attract the attn of the feds orderring it.

You mean like my special order of ascorbic acid powder did at my local Boots... got a call from Special Branch asking what I wanted it for... Told them it was part of a highly explosive use known as a "Grant Loaf" (as invented by Mrs Doris Grant - an extremely wholemeal loaf, that rises) and if I wanted to make explosives I'd be visiting a number of agricultural supplies merchants and doing off with 25kg sacks of ammonium nitrate, sodium chlorate and other items habitually left lying around on farms rather than a damned expensive 100g of ascorbic acid.

Yes, precisely.

I might give the isoproyl myriate a body swerve after reading this. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.natracare.com/p119/en-GB/Your-Health/Chemicals-in-body-care/Isopropyl-myristate.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.natracare.com/p119/en-GB/You ... state.aspx</a><!-- m -->

Henk, what about lanolin anhydrous? if melted down and blended with the OCM, will it stay liquified or return back to its wax like state?

The middle line talks about stearates being bad - you know like in soap... could it be that NatraCare have an agenda and a product to push? Just a thought from a full-time cynical bastard :)

I feel that there is something going on HM. I am waiting for Henks words of reassurance though.

Can't think why it would be better as a cleansing method than a good soap/detergent, or a good solvent, like alcohol. Maybe the oil is better at gently 'drawing out' the skin grease...

Personally, I rely on water, and sometimes soap, to clean my face.

Henk

I tried a Dermalogica cleanser - canot remmeber the name, sorry - one of it's major ingredient was safflower oil.

I know people in India (those that can afford to) for a long time use almond oil on their bodies, coconut in hair and a few oil based face cleansers. My grandma had stunning skin and hair. There are so many types of oils, and i'm sure some of them are great at cleansing, as you have proved. Henk, It's amazing and I hope to try what you have done some day.

just saw this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.scform.blogspot.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.scform.blogspot.com/</a><!-- m --> click EDIT, then FIND ON THIS PAGE, and type in 'DHC' if you're using Internet explorer

Well, it reads like the proverbial bell and ringer (in the Dutch proverb "you've heard the bell toll, but you don't have the faintest idea where the ringer is located"). The dead giveaway that they know squat is where they address isopropyl myristate as an alcohol...

isopropyl myristate is a wax, an ester of a monoalcohol (isopropanol in this case), and a fatty acid (myristic acid). Oils and fats are esters from a 'tri-alcohol' (glycerine) and fatty acids. Isopropyl myristate is a naturally occuring substance, found, with other waxes and oils, in animal skin fats and in vegetable waxes. Lanolin also contains it. Lanolin is a mixture of waxes and oils, as it is basically sheep's sebum.

Some cosmetic ingredients can be comedogenic (inducing pimples). Here is a Dutch ultrabrief summary from a significant article by Lanzet (1986):

Siliconen (Dimethicon, Cyclomethicon).
Vaseline (Petrolatum).
Minerale olie (Paraffinum Liquidum).
Cetylalcohol.
Glycerine.

Wolvet is niet of nauwelijks comedogeen, maar sommige verbindingen kunnen zeer comedogeen zijn. Stearinezuur is nauwelijks comedogeen.

Comedogeniteit in plantaardige olie:
Vrij sterk tot sterk comedogeen:
- Zoete amandelolie
- Druivepitolie
- Kokosolie
- Perzikpitolie
Enigszinds tot redelijk comedogeen:
- Pindaolie
- Distelolie (safloerolie)
- Zonnebloemolie
Niet comedogeen
- Avocado-olie
- Wonderolie

It concludes that isopropyl esters are comedogenic, on their own. That does not mean that products containing these will also be comedogenic. Below 5% it is highly unlikely that the product will be.

If you want to be 'safe' you could opt for other emollients, such as cetyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, or lanolin, none of which are classified as comedogenic. And yes, all of these will readily dissolve in the oil and stay dissolved.

The latest brew...

2 parts Castor oil
1 part jojoba oil
1 part almond oil
0.5 part isopropyl myristate
0.25 pure lanolin
Tea tree EO

So far so good and no visit from the federalies either.
