That's a fine selection! I know you want to try them all right now, but before you do ... breathe! Ahhh ... and now when you do try them, look first at whether they're stainless, chrome or platinum and take a note of where they're made. Some of those are carbon steel as well (largely the Treet) and these will give a completely different shave, often improving as they go.

See the Tiger (centre/bottom)? Chuck that one in the bin!

I'd say start with what you know: Gillette. Try another Gillette, take note, then another, take note ... and when you try something different, compare back to the most similar Gillette you just tried.

Your Gillette Rubies will come in a blank sleeve, but they will say Gillette Rubie on them:

Notice the distinct similarity in packaging to the Rapira Platinum Lux? That could be one of your first comparisons to make ...

Have a lot of fun!

Generally, I'd say no ...

That said, I really do like PermaSharp Super and have bit of a soft spot for Sputnik and VOSKHOD. That is about it for Gillette, for me. I really like Treet and enjoy a lot from Lord (including Shark). Blades are a very personal thing and just a quick look at the "best and worst" thread, you'll see some post their top 5 best and worst to see the very next person listing many of those blades in quite the reverse order.

When trying these out, not only consider sharpness and smoothness (does it do the job?) but also how comfortable it felt (some folks just don't like to feel the blade, others do ... it's not tuggy, but some enjoy a good rasping), what the regrowth is like (this tells you how uniform and close the shave really was) and finally whether the blade has a specific character that you can identify.

You'll find your favourites ...

... and you'll know immediately blades that you don't like. But, give it another year or two and go back to those, and you'll find a whole new stack of friends.

I have seven different Techs and an HD500. I will always keep the HD in my collection because it's built like a tank and shaves very smoothly, but I can get a closer shave from all of my Techs. They are very mild, efficient shavers but require good technique to achieve bbs. I would respectfully suggest that you don't make too many changes in the early days - learn a razor before you move onto the next, because they will all shave slightly differently.

What are these gillette safety razors like?

Anyone tried them?
If so, are they mild of aggressive?

Seem to be called gillette 7 o clock safety razors
