Music DVDs

Hi fi geeks argue that nothing matches the sound quality of two channel stereo for music. I love my traditional hi fi set up through which I play a wide variety of music. But I also have in the same room (different seating position) an AV amp plus five speakers and a sub woofer linked with a good size TV for films and music DVDs. I listen to and watch a lot of opera on DVD. And I also have a small collection of live pop/rock concert DVDs.

My reason for posting this thread is to pick up suggestions about live concert DVDs which may be worth considering.

I'm about to watch this Celine Dion concert again. If there is a better pop music DVD I'd like to hear about it. The sound and picture are outstanding, the sets superbly choreographed - typical Las Vegas glitz and Celine Dion gives a magnificent performance throughout.

There are no doubt a variety of musical tastes here but I would really appreciate hearing about some of your favourite music DVDs. I'm not going to be spending much on shaving so I must have something to look forward to buying in the new year.

For a live DVD in the rock category try the Led Zeppelin one. (Not The Song Remains The Same  )

The quality is fantastic.

Regards & Merry Xmas.

Hi Fido,

What a nice thread you started. As for what hi fi geeks think or don't think, I have both stereo and a dd5.1 home theatre too, but I miss too much from movies and dd 5.1 music to keep playing them in stereo. (I can't play dts yet)

As for music DVD's, I personally like everything from Big Country but that's definitely because I was a big fan of the group. I like U2, Rattle and Hum, but maybe, if you're a bit inbetween pop, rock and classic, the Sting-DVD Bring on the night with an awesome drum-solo in "I burn for you" from Omar Hakim.

I'll check my collection and come up with some more.

Bye,

Eric

Good Music DVDs?

Colosseum - The Reunion Concert 1994 in Cologne - the 1971 line up. Awesome. (Dave Clempson's solo work effectively shows up Eric Clapton as an over-hyped pub standard picker!) Late sixties/early seventies rock.

The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over Tour 1994. Note perfect but effectively marking the end of the late sixties/early seventies West Coast sound that they hijacked and commercialised.

The Band - The Last Waltz 1978. Directed by Scorcese closing a chapter on what has been reinvented as "Americana".

I haven't always looked or acted like a middle aged reactionary, man...

Okay, here's some of mine. You may want to read about the style of music that some of these bands play before you spend.

Dream Theater - live at budokan
Dream Theater - Score

Cream - Albert Hall 2005

Toto - Live In Amsterdam
Toto - Falling In Between - Live

Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere

Bad Company - In Concert - Merchants Of Cool

Rush - Rush In Rio
Rush - R30

That'll do for now.

Ian

My I'm out of touch! I will check these out.

I'm listening/watching a DVD of Alison Krauss "A Hundred Miles or More" right now. An interesting idea - it's featuring her in the recording studio going through a repertoire. One of my best DVD concerts is Alison Krauss + Union Station - Live. As good as it gets for blue grass - country music.

SWMBO took me to see La Krauss and the guys in the band for my 50th at the SAGE in 2005. The DVD performance is exactly the same as that stage show, same narrative, one-liners and set list. She was very good indeed. We did subsequently get the DVD...I'll watch it again soon, thanks Fido. :p

If you like the authentic good stuff check out The Flying Burritto Brothers "Gilded Palace of Sin." (CD) Sold poorly at the time (late sixties) but has become a cult classic, as they say. Gram Parsons at his best, effectively inventing the entire country/rock genre with the ubiquitous and always excellent Chris Hillman!

Shave, Soap & Rock & Roll!

Thanks Fido, the West Coast genre is my area of armchair expertise but I really must work on my spelling!

The comments following the track list sum up the album quite succinctly, in my view...however I'm too much of a gentleman to use such glaring profanity!

Somewhere between music video and live show but topping the Talking Head's Stop Making Sense is going to be a tough call in my book

Starts off with just David Byrne on stage:

And slowly builds until the stage is packed:

not DVD but if you have a 5.1 system with SACD then the remastered war of the worlds is excellent. It plays in stereo on normal players but is still worth a purchase.
