Looking for vegan shaving soaps

I've tried a new soap today - Dr. Jon "Propaganda" - and my first impression is pretty good. The shave was nice and the skin feels nice afterwards as well. Thumbs up so far.
Once my other orders will come in, I'll try to make a summary of my findings.
 
I like Caties Bubbles and Wickhams.

I also know PAA (Phoenix Artisan Accouterments) owner is vegan hence his soaps are vegan too.

I'd love to try the PAA chocolate-burbon soap, that sounds just nice. Sadly, while the soap seems to be reasonably priced, the shipping costs jst doubled the price and pushed it over the limit, where I would have to pay custom and additional taxes here in germany. That makes this soap really expensive when I compare it to other good soaps.


I am still waiting for my first Caties Bubbles, but I really like my Wickhams very much too.
 
How do you know that Palm oil production hasn't been responsible for the destruction of Orangutan habitat? I have no preference over Tallow or vegetable origin, at least Tallow is using up waste products and is more green to me than Palm.
 
I don't see tallow as a "waste" product, as I don't see the need to kill the animal for food in the first place, but this is a whole different topic and story though and would be digressing from the topic of this thread again.

You are right though, that palm oil prodction in certain areas kills endangered Orangutans and in most cases you don't know the origin of that ingredient. Some manufactures are also aware of that issue and use palm oil from certified and sustainable sources, like Columbia.

The soap, that I use in the shower also uses palm oil from similar sources.

But yes, palm oil production is an important point. In some cases, you just don't know as a consumer. It is the same with stearic acid or glycerin, which can be plant or animal based. Sometimes even the soap manufacturer does not know, where the ingredients come from. It is the case of "ignorance being bliss" again.
All you can do as a customer is trying to educate yourself, try to find out what materials and ingredients are used and make an educated decission to either use a certain product, even if there are some unknown factors involved or choose a different product.
In my opinion, that beats knowing about certain issues and problems and doing nothing, just because it is more convenient.

I ordered 4 soaps from west coast; the shipping was flat 20 usd i think. So 5 per soap. Not that much.

Also i know shavingstation stocks it, not sure on the price but it's shipping for EU is i think 4.x gbp for one soap...

One addendum to the palm oil point...

I found a small german soap maker with the name "Waldfussel" that makes shaving soap without palm oil. Most are vegan as well, but you need to check each soap. If it is vegan, it is labeled as such.

That is good to know, a european shop is indeed helpfull.
 
I had a nice email from Dr. Jon's company.
While their soaps are vegan alright, the palm oil isn't from sustainable sources at the moment. They are very aware of the problem but cannot get the quantities they need on the market.
They are working on a palm oil free version, which might be released in the future. That would be a good thing and I am looking forward to test it, once it is available.

It is tempting, a fruity scent, but I am not that big of a fan with the menthol.
Reviews seem to be good though, when you like that.
