This is a challenge for me, never done anything like this before. Been sent this to do the best I can, I thend send it back for it to be honed & scales fitted.

This will all be done by hand

Good luck Shaun, that rust appears pretty thick in places... Can you not give it a cheeky dremal or something on those really bad spots? I have read of using sand paper wrapped around a cork as a good manual method for the blade itself but have never tried it.

Unfortunately I don't have a Dremel, I'm using wet & dry lubed with WD40 on a cork. Cheers, it's a mission for sure

If it's any help I find rubbing compound for car body work very good at getting rid of rust and such , it's very mildly abrasive and works very well with plenty elbow grease

It's something to occupy my mind, was sent to me for peanuts, hell then hone it & put scales on & return it to me.

Gave up on the restoration of a blade and decided to go for forced patina using an orange so now it looks sort of artsy...

No pic but Google "forced patina blade" for method and pics, end result is not predictable, expect the unexpected.

Found a pic had no fancy etching on the blade to save so the orange seemed a good idea to hide rust imperfections and my lack of elbowgrease
(wrong scales, Swedish Erik Anton Berg and a Sheffield blade, so plan is making new ones, is it worth it, not really, but need the practice before I decide on other projects)

If you manage to get some of the rust off/away from the etching, you can use nail varnish to cover just the etching. The rest of the blade is exposed with the etching protected for polishing or suchlike - bit of nail varnish remover (acetone) thereafter and you're sorted!
