I'm going against the grain by not going against the grain

I've always struggled with shaving ATG, finding it easily irritates my skin, but I love how close and soft it can be.

Recently I have tried something slightly different which has yielded essentially a BBS, whilst avoiding going ATG and zero irritation:

1. Go WTG,

2. Go XTG - also, I find going from left to right, and the right to left really helps to remove more hair with no extra irritation, this only helps on my top lip as that's just how the hair grows there, but is worth experimenting with,

3. Instead of going ATG next, I take a slightly different approach; I make a 'hybrid' of ATG and XTG i.e., I make 45° strokes upwards (instead of 0° as you would with 'proper' ATG).

I only do this on my top lip as that's the place that suffers the most for me with ATG.

This removes all of the hair and saves my skin.

I'm sure someone's mentioned this before, but I've never seen it written, so if you have trouble with ATG, maybe give this a go and let us know how you get on?

I go WTG and XTG just to thin my moustache on my top lip; I've had a short trimmed one since I was seventeen.

I have to go XTG both ways at about 45 degrees upwards, as thats the way the hair mainly grows on my neck.

Have always had to do a 4 pass shave to get good results: WTG, XTG each way, then ATG to get a shave that isn't still like sandpaper in places. Can achieve more with an aggressive razor like the Progress dialled up to 3+

1 days growth unchecked will razz away and bobble T-shirt necklines, fleece collars and shirt collars. I try to only shave every 2-3 days if i can.

Spent years of my working life going thru neck skin hell because of electric shavers which i just had to use in afternoon / early evening if i was wearing a shirt and tie.

Have found the light now - only have to wear formal shirts for weddings and funerals :ROFLMAO:

If that works for you then great!

I only do 2 passes. 1 wtg and 1 atg with a little tidying. We're all different.

My skin doesn't like 3 passes...

I'm three passes no matter what the razor is. WTG, XTG and ATG, which developed when I started using a straight razor, that helped me learn a lot.

i could be wrong but that’s unusual to hear of someone no liking XTG normally a lot of people don’t like ATG
out of curiosity have you mapped your face with cotton wool ?.
Just because your razor is going XTG doesn’t actually mean your bristles are in that direction.
im not trying to tell you how to suck eggs but some people don’t check

I find ATG is easy on 'open country', but on more difficult places like upper and lower lip... I don't think I've ever really done it as not much margin for error. I don't use straight razors, but it might be easier with one of them.
