I had a play with a vernier

Why would you need a vernier to get measurements to a resolution of 1mm? Any fool with one working eye and a ruler could get that close... The whole point of the vernier scale (where 10 equal marks are squeezed into - usually - 9mm) is that you can measure things using the callipers to a resolution of 0.1mm

Note for any budding metrologists out there, resolution is not the same as accuracy - to be accurate, you'd need a calibrated tool and be using the correct mensuration technique.

...it occurred to me that Bruce's vernier may well be Chinese in which case it would be well suited to measuring knots give or take a mm or so.

How about Antdad on measuring tools.blogspot.com....I reckon Bruce is about 6'.
