Hones ?

Before I started DE shaving, I stupidly bought a straight razor without doing any research at all. I got it from the Strop Shop and it came shave ready. I had a few shaves that I enjoyed but the razor obviously lost its edge. The price for strops and hones left me gob smacked. I know these last a lifetime but you either have the money or you don't.

I saw this hone on t'bay and wondered if it would be any good.

Also, are old strops worth buying / easy to make?

Not for keeping a all ready shave ready razor sharp too low a grit. though by the looks of it I dont think it is what it says it is looks coarse, This would be far better suited <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Chinese-Water-Hone-Waterstone-straight-razor-/130347556778?pt=UK_Collectables_Barber_Shop_Collectables_LE&hash=item1e5951dfaa" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Chinese-Water ... 1e5951dfaa</a><!-- m -->
But before all that you need a strop a vintage strop in good condition will work as well as a new one but it needs to be soft and subtle even surface with no nicks that interfer with the blade, your a best picking up a practice strop from neil about 30 pounds,

My "progression" is a budget one but it seems work.
