Help me to love a Straight Edge...

I am using SR from quite long now didn't really face any trouble, yeah sharpening the blade but its not the problem I guess, I think Straight Razor for Beginner would help you understand some basis, might you're missing something crucial!

Thanks Lee.
If you have a read of the comments, it transpires that it was my edge which was causing me issues.
Having last week purchased a properly honed vintage Sheffield, it is like a completely different animal. I have now realised that the issue was not me, but my blade. (which has saved my sanity)
My Dovo has now been inspected by FergieBilly and apparently it had never been honed correctly (avoid The Invisible Edge seems to be the general consensus here). Billy has now re-bevelled it, and honed it for me. I hope to get it back this week.

Just bumping this as I'm dying to know how you got on with the properly honed razor.

I've a couple of Dovo's myself, a "Best Quality" and a "Bismarck".
The Bismarck was almost shave ready out of the box and was made shave ready by me with Chrome Oxide and then 100 laps on linen (firehose type) strop followed by 100 on Russet Horsehide.
The Best Quality needed a 3k - 8k - 10k honing followed by CrOx and stropping but is a great 5/8ths now.

I'm curious too on how it progressed. My experience with Dovo has been good but the first thing I did when I purchased the stainless steel straight razor was to send it off to Billy who made a superb job of getting it shave ready. I use it every two days since August and always get an excellent shave which feels great. It is definitely my favourite razor

Hi Bealsibub

I have persevered and am now loving all my blades. There is definitely a difference between my Dovo and my English steel blades. I was surprised.
However, whilst I now prefer using my SR's, I do still feel that my shavette gives as good, if not better than my knives. Certainly the shave is closer
Controversial I know.....but it will be interesting to see if I feel the same in another year of using straights

Thanks for the update. I'm pleased to hear you persevered
Prior to my Dovo En Vogue, I used a Feather Artist Club DX with Pro blades. There definitely is a great difference between the two with the Dovo much more forgiving. They both give great shaves but the technique has to be different for each.
Good shaving

Give it time. The closest shaves I get out of any shaving format are my self-honed straight razors.

Couldn't agree more, about 6 months after i had got the hang of shaving with a straight i could still get a closer shave with my R41 and Feather combo, another 18 months down the line of mostly using a straight and nothing even gets close now. there was no lightbulb moment or sudden realisation just steady but small improvements.

Stick with it and i'm sure one day you'll wonder why you even bothered with the shavette
