Hello from Dumbarton

Yep, doing it wrong works well for me.

Thanks for all he welcoming comments. Such a friendly place. Think I'm gonna go ahead and get the 34c. Any suggestions on blades or should I just stick with the astra?
Good choice of razor and blade. Work with the Astra to dial in the combination but get a samples of a few PPI blades like GSB, Polsilver SI, Nacet, Gillette 7 O'Clock yellow, Astra SS. Then buy 100s' of the ones you like.
I found Rapira Super Stainless really cheap but not in the Astra class. They work reasonably well for me so I got 400. They work well in all my 6 razors.
Don't underestimate the value of good preparation. Build a slick lather and you should be having some enjoyable shaves.

Hello and welcome Gary,
I head shave with a 34C, I use Trumpers Limes Skin Food as a pre-shave, I do 3 passes, with the growth, across the growth and against the growth, I use Polsilver SI blades and bin them after 3 shaves. I do my face afterwards. After shaving I use Swiss Pitralon splash then Nivea sensitive balm to finish, works for me, head like a cue ball. +1 on the no pressure thing.

+1 on the Macca Root, Chris

Welcome! We have an establisghed member of this parish from your town - I'm surprised he hasn't commented here yet. I use a Merkur 34c (though on my face rather than head) and I reckon it's a brilliant everyday easy-to-use DE razor; not the most exciting or aggressive, but a reliable and well-made design.
