The Later Designed Gem SEs from the 1930s Onwards Starting with the Open Comb Micromatic, Clog Pruf, Bullet Tip, G Bar & Feather Weight & a Few Other were Designed for a Current Factory SE Blade..They are a Different Animal to the Older SEs that were Designed for Stropping Blades..Very Nice Razors..Tried it again this morning, cap virtually on my face no pressure and very carefully. A two pass shave this time. A good shave but more aggressive than I need. Still a lot of stinging with the alum block.
I'll stick at it, maybe I'll give shimming a go!
If it wasn't for the fact that the razor looks so cool I'd have given up on it. I'd like to get it to work for me, the idea of shaving with a razor that's significantly older than me is very appealing. I'm also convinced it's capable of very good shaves. If you are using the Personna a Gem SS blades you should be able to get at least five although some have got ten or more. YMMV. Did you try the shim to see if that would improve things? Edit.... @riverrun Sorry to go off post. I see you have a Rocnel GEM, in your lending pool. I have just picked one up. How do you find the optimal angle with this razor. Assuming you have used this razor, do you go for the cap flush to the face, like the ER 1912?Most has already been said:
- A British made Ever-Ready 1912 from the 1930s
- Designed for stropping blades, but...
- ... modern blades are fine if ↪shimmed.
- If shimmed, put the cap flat on your face
- NO PRESSURE.
- Nobody would replate a 1912, as they clean up nicely - even if filthy.
- Read the ↪1912 patent with the razor at hand if you want to appreciate the genius of the design.
- Enjoy.

As with any razor, my procedure is: Put the head on the back of my hand, handle sticking out at 90 degrees. Pull the razor along the back of your hand (or lower arm if your hands are truly hairless), lowering the handle as you go along. As soon as the blade catches, that's roughly the angle I use. This leads to ↪"riding the cap" and I find that a good idea with any DE/SE razor.
