Ever Ready (Flip Open) (c.1950s)

A few years back, I presented my little collection of Ever-Ready Deluxe cases from the 1950s. The oldest advertisement that I have found for these was from Christmas 1949 and so I base my assumption that those were released at the very end of the 1940s and sold into the 1950s.

Also into the 1950s, although many many many times sold as 1930s (which I believe is wrong) are these flip-open cases. I don't have a better name for them and have not found one in advertising literature [other than one which referred to them also as Deluxe sets].

Presenting the (other) Ever Ready from the 1950s:

I think I have all the colours, but never say never ...

Amongst this collection are a couple of interesting ones, first the Star with an etched *STAR* on the cap:

AM-JKLXLGQiUYEBmhaB7Q0iHltbUzd4MoqNu_4UWgBQDVPdV0VyejByMWMoECEBcp7s64SAGYen4-kS-KvX6yY8VxT30DzjElFZyLnl1wUe1oS5bhhngli2l5ssMKliPpRNrFoOkKRi12Fa3v9VoLlwlxUxC6w=s800

Second, a British GEM which you can see the British Made on the case as well:

My belief is that these were exported to Australia (and I've generally seen the British Made GEM from that market) and possibly Canada? Interesting to note that the font/typeface used on the GEM is the same as we see on the (somewhat mysterious) RADIO razor.

There's also the Australian 150th Anniversary celetration case:

Paul,
So glad you have not got rid of your Stache of Vintage SEs, which shows the History of ER in UK and some odd variations.Did you ever get a Gem Streamline ?

I don't have a Gem Streamline yet ... I might turn my attention to Streamlines at some point. Futile, as you have them all! :ROFLMAO:

I do have a clamshell, a double metal case (Double Strop Chrome Set) and a single metal case. All Ever Ready. Oh, and a green Ambassador Set. I should check as one of those might be a Gem?

Picking out a few razors for the coming week from my inventory list, I puzzled over an entry for a Star 1912 which I'd noted had a blue case with embossed Star Cadet on it. Blowed if I can find it. That led me on two trips to the loft this morning whereupon I photographed this lot, then a third trip to retrive the Aussie 150th. I have limited space, so much of the cased stuff is in a box in the loft.

I do love the 1912 and consider that the core of my single edge collection, around which I have a (good) number of peripheral models that I enjoy using or enjoy the aesthetics of. I sold everything Micromatic onwards in one go to a German collector, retaining just one Featherweight (with an olive handle) and a Natural Angle Deluxe (in gold) ... then re-bought a Treet (baton) and two of the three Contour models (both II variants). So, it's Damaskeene to Peerless in the 1912 and a handful of "other" ASR ... but in the main: 1912. I like 1912s and I like Gillette Techs.

... as I'm often re-quoting: "Find something you like and use it often", a quote attributed to the Automotive Detailer Mike Phillips (at the time, of Meguiars).

The (other) Deluxe Sets I referenced at the top of the post:

Paul,
I actually brought and sold on quite a few Clamshell Razor/Stropper to forum members for modest prices, as I do not have the neck to go on E Bay. That double strop in a metal case is ace. I just discovered I had an extra Jewel ie Razor in metal case, thought I had sold it. I have a Razor combi set lacking a Razor which has original packing and leather case, Thinking whether or not to make it up !! Other than that not chasing any Vintage SE.
