Edwin Jagger DE.87 Review

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

I've got an EJ DE87 (ivory) and the only reference to the weights of all the Jagger razors is on the Fendrihan website.

He posts the weight of the DE87 at 63g.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-classic-razor-ivory-p-418.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-c ... p-418.html</a><!-- m -->

The metal handled version (DE89) is also stated as 63g.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-classic-razor-with-chrome-plating-p-626.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-c ... p-626.html</a><!-- m -->

I also have an Ivory handled Chatsworth. This weighs in at 65g.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-chatsworth-classic-razor-ivory-p-254.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-c ... p-254.html</a><!-- m -->

However the metal handled Chatsworth weighs in at 110g.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-chatsworth-doubleedge-razor-polished-finish-p-723.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fendrihan.com/edwin-jagger-c ... p-723.html</a><!-- m -->

My guess is that the shorter (DE89) metal handle is hollow and this accounts for the same weight as the shorter (DE87) solid ivory.
However the longer handled metal Chatsworth is solid and this explains the weight gain over the ivory Chatsworth.

I also think the R41 is a Merkur 25C head on a DE89 handle.

Confusing? :lol:

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Mine weighs in at 69g (without blade) 70g (with blade)

It's this one:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/DE87db5%7C%7C~@c~Traditional~safety~&~double~edge~razors~@b~@r~All%7C0%7Cuser%7C1,0,0,1%7C17%7C" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com ... ,1%7C17%7C</a><!-- m -->

And it is 3 5/8 inches ! Unlike any of the previous post! Handle is 3 1/2 inches.

Who is confused?

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Thanks Fido

I'll try to get some weights on my ivory DE87 and Chatsworth to compare. 69g v 65g is not too far out.

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

That will be me! :? :? . I have heard that Merkur make all the heads for Edwin Jagger & Muhle. Can anyone confirm if this is right or wrong? :?

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Mine is the EJ 89L but the EJ web page does not list a weight for it.

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Fozz, I think Dan from the Shack said something along the same lines. I'm sure he said he'd spoken with someone from Dovo Solignen about the Merkur heads on the R41 Muhles. In all honesty, I was a bit lost at that point and felt too embarrassed to ask for clarification. In short, I haven't got a scooby.

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Up until November last year Jagger/Muhle were using the closed comb version of the Merkur head but then they introduced a very similar head that was made just for themselves.

As for the open comb Muhle R41, I think this is still the open comb version of the Merkur head.

To recapitulate, do I understand that Merkur manufacture the Muhle heads that are supplied to EJ?
What a to-do!

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

They make the open heads for them but not the straight bar heads.

R89, R106, DE87 etc - MEUHLE / Jagger head

R41 - Merkur open combe head, same as 15C, 41 etc.

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Nape, thanks for making the mud a little clearer.... I 'm off to order a straight, its much easier. only about 71 different sizes, 2 different materials 7 different grinds & prices from $15.00 upto $2,500.00 to choose from. time for a pint me thinks.. :roll:

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

Nice one HM...count me in. I recently found a half decent beer here. Samual Adams Imperial White, 10.4% alc. After 8 long necks i was singing with the dog in the back yard. Well thats what SWMBO said the next day. :lol:

Ordinarily I'd be quick to ridicule American beer but Samuel Adams is quite decent.
Have one for me!

Re: Edwin Jagger DE.87

No worries will do. I had quite a few last night, 7 to be precise then had to switch to margaritas before I started yeodleing. :lol:
