Turns out he's a bona FIDE (see what I did there chess geeks?) chess coach and is in contact with a former Scottish champion who lives locally for more coaching.

Great stuff. I used to love a good game of chess in my early teens. I too used to play in the School team and local tournaments, I was pretty useless but enjoyed myself
In fact, all this chess'ey business has had me rummaging through the cupboards for this bad boy. I begged, stole & borrowed to get this back in the early 80's
With its 2mhz processor, 2 KB of RAM & 16 KB ROM it was (and still is) a formidable opponent...For useless players like me
