It's probably a fair claim to say it's the original high-end DE razor but 'best' is subjective as mentioned earlier.I do believe you are correct (to be sold to the general public) there were hospital Stainles steel DE razors produced (US) before the AS-D1. P.

I have not used the Feather Popular so can not comment on that particular razor but I have the Feather Portable which I believe may be simalar and it does not feel like the AS-D2 at all. The feather Portable is not as mild as the AS-D2 IMO . P.Can i ask (whilst you are all gathered here) if the Feather AS razors are markedly different in use to the Feather Popular ?
I ask because i so desperately wanted to love the Feather Popular when i bought it, after reading so many rave reviews, but i find it quite difficult to find the correct angle, because of the plastic safety bars which seem to get in the way a bit. It seems to require quite a steep angle to get a consistent close shave.
Which is a pity, because the Feather Popular is a lovely little budget razor, in terms of design and engineering.
I do really like a mild razor (like my go-to Merkur 20c) and have always been half-minded to splashing the cash on a well engineered razor of premium materials, like the Feather AS range
You can borrow my AS-D1 or my AS-D2 or both !It's probably a fair claim to say it's the original high-end DE razor but 'best' is subjective as mentioned earlier.
I've never used one of these. I'll probably come to you good folk to loan me one of these out of curiousity in the early part of next year.
I bought a 2nd Gen IKON OC in Stainless when I bought my AS-D1 quite a few years ago. Ithink Tradere and Weber were available as well?I do believe you are correct (to be sold to the general public) there were hospital Stainles steel DE razors produced (US) before the AS-D1. P.

That's very true, it's all about the bottom line! P.I take everything Harrod's of shaving says with a truck of salt. I've had a few run in's with whoever runs their social media and they always end up deleting their replies to me. There is no such thing as an objective, unbiased dealer... anyone trying to earn money will always suggest their own line first followed by whatever has the highest profit margin.
P, you're a scholar and a gentleman! Thank you. I'll let you know when I'm through the recent hatch of razorsYou can borrow my AS-D1 or my AS-D2 or both !P.

Well I suppose everyone talks up their own book, but their own branded products (I'm thinking of the Outlaw razor and their own soaps and creams) do seem to get good reviews. And not just on their own website.I take everything Harrod's of shaving says with a truck of salt. Gillette OLD, Gillette Tech, Gillette New. Any of those fit the bill.I'm a subscriber to the Executive Shaving newsletter and was intrigued by this week's email which included the following:
I've never tried a Feather razor so I can't say either way, but I would be interested in others' opinions on this. What do you think is the best DE safety razor that money can buy?
When does "modern" begin?Am I correct in thinking the AS-D1 was the first modern stainless DE razor?
You can buy a used one for half the price if you are patient or place a want to buy on BST.Well I suppose everyone talks up their own book, but their own branded products (I'm thinking of the Outlaw razor and their own soaps and creams) do seem to get good reviews. Interesting thoughts about the Feather though. Much as I'd like to I just can't pull the trigger at £170 though.
£60 for a fatboy. Jings! I got one about 10 years ago, perfect for £20! There were bargains galore. Market forces I suppose.I love the look of the as-d2 and the Rex ambassador but I can't justify paying the prices when my £60 fatboy and slim are giving me the best shaves of my life. Not sure I agree with the statement but as I haven't tried them I may be wrong.
60 quid was a decent price for the excellent condition it was in. Seen green scummy grungy ones on the bay sell for 70-80 quid. Boxed near mint condition slim was a decent price too.£60 for a fatboy.
