Hello all,

I´m searching for my first straight and can´t decide whitch to take.
Thanks Neil and Mikael for help, but I still don´t know which will be good for me.

So could you help me with choosing the First one ?
I don´t know whitch will give me a good shave, has a very good steel quality, is well balanced and great for start same as great for Pro shavers.
I was thinking about 5/8 to 6/8 round point, from Neils article and communication but other things I can´t just choose.

What do you guys think about these ??

I really like pure simple, nothing exotic or very colorfull and without markings on the blade. Pure steel and wood or other handle material excl.platic.
I also like Eskilstunas from Sweden and Filarmonicas, but can´t find source where to buy a NOS one.

So what do you guy think ? Thanks for all advices and have a nice Sunday evening.

Laci

Why NOS?

There are some good ones to be had on Neils site, maybe not NOS, but in great shape, and then at least you're sure to start of with one that's sure to be honed perfectly.

In any case, go for a round point, so leave the second one out for the moment...

First one is lovely, but that's because it's french ;)

From what I gather from other forums and other people, Revisor also sells their razors shave ready. (can someone confirm or deny?)

I think these ones are not bad, and not overly expensive.
Don't forget you'll need a strop too.

Don't buy a mad expensive one for a first, learn, try & find out if straight shaving is for you.

Yes, Revisor ships shave ready (and they actually hone the blades by hand, so it´s not like a factory Dovo edge).

Laci: Neil has some Eskilstuna razors that are shaveready and has been made from NOS blanks. I really like Revisor blades, but of the ones you´ve picked out I think the Le Grelot prob is the best shaver. If I knew what I know now when I started and was in you posítion, I would pick that razor. Did it make sense? But there are some really nice vintage ones at Revisors site though ...

TO MAX : Thanks for your tips Max, but I want the first one new or nos. If straight shaving won´t be for me than razor will be for my first son :).
Neil have a few nice and two Eskilstunas , but after trying used DE shavers I didn´t feel good. I have it polished, ultrasonicly cleaned and few times sterilizes
and there was still the strange feeling. Maybe it´s a little disorder but I realised that I can´t go this way so thats the reason of looking
for new or nos one.
Almost forget that I like to simple design without anything on the blade like gold print or other methods.

So the TI - Le Grelot is favourite, nice and clea, top quality and shoulderless.

Are there any other to look at ?
Is the 3 pin handle better than 2 pin ? or its just the visual effect ? or it has more strenght to hold the blade in right possition ?

What about something other from Solingen, Double Duck, Henckels, Puma, Dorko ?

The Silverwing from TI is awesome !!

Thanks for write up !!

Laci

Yeah, the Le Grelot is nice so are the Silverwings. But the Törnblom razors Neil has, has never been used they´re NOS and the scales are custom made by Neil for those blades.

I only see that Törnblom are out of stock. Its for real or only to kick buyers ? ;) Maybe there is still something in Neils closet :).
Heljestrand and Hellberg are used and smaller that i want. But thanks for the info, I will PM if there is any last NOS Törnblom.

Any experiences with Lindhberg ?

This Puma looks also very nice:

What about Friodur ?

The razors sold by Thomas at Revisor come shave ready, and they are NOS, but that does not mean perfect. I've purchased from Thomas and he is very good to work with.

Neil has some excellent razors and they come shave ready. I also think Neil may be willing to work with a new shaver a bit more. That is an opinion based only on what I have seen in the forums. I've also purchased from Neil and he is a delight to work with.

Bottom line is that as your first razor, it will always hold a special place, but you may move on to other styles or grinds only to come back later. It seems new users tend to like the heavy grinds, quarter to half hollow, a bit more to start, but then move on to full hollow razors as they gain experience. Although a few of us settle into a nice relationship with most any grind.

Swedish steel tends to be a bit harder and stiffer than German steel, but once dialed in it is great!

Friodur, or any stainless blade, is best left for later. Stainless can be difficult. Chris Moss almost gave up straight shaving because he had so much trouble with a stainless first razor.

That Lindbergh has been for sale forever. No one knows.

Puma made some of the best production razors, but you will pay for them. I personally don't care for the scales on that one, too clunky.

Thanks for great additional info Hawkeye.

The TI Le Grelot from Martin will be as next, as first I´ll have an Rex (Eskilstuna nr.8) from Rolf at classicrazor.de for a bargain and shave ready.

Do you guys know any other good sources for Nos razors ? I saw Filli´s at varonia.com for 55 and 75 Euros. Are these models good to try ?

Regards
Laci

While Filarmonica is one of my personal favorites, I have a feeling the lower priced ones on the varonia website may be end-of-production razors and not of the same quality. Classic Shaving here in the US had a bunch of the end-of-production razors and the opinion is that they just were not the same as the vintage. They look almost right, but I'm just not sure they are the better of the lot. You might inquire.

Do you want to stay on your side of the Atlantic? I know customs and other fees can be a deal killer when purchasing from the US.

You are right with customs, from 1st of this month I´m gonna pay customs and tax for all things over 20 dollars.
I was wondering why is the 6/8 Filla from varonia.com so cheap. I have also found one chap in French forum who sells "12"
for 100 Euro. So now I´m totally confused, at the bay all are going for too much I think.

Yes, the Filarmonica razors have been hot for some time now. There is a fellow in Spain and a woman in South America (I don't recall where) that have been selling NOS razors on eBay. They each must have a boxcar full!

There are a number of Filarmonica variations, the Doble Temple seems the most common. Leon could fill you in much better than I regarding the various models.

The #13, while normally listed as 6/8ths actually measures 13/16ths. I would think the #12 may be 11/16ths rather than 5/8ths. I'm fine with 13/16ths razors, but it may make a difference to some. Just be aware they are 1/16th larger than the nominal size. This seems to be the case with some makers or models.
