I suggest you look out for a Wilkinson Sword Classic razor - it's good for beginners because it gives a fairly mild shave. Larger branches of Boots have them, or you can get them on Amazon, and a razor with a set of blades will only cost a fiver.
You can always buy a dearer razor once your technique improves.

Does lathering in a bowl make a lot of difference though? And is pure badger hair always the way to go with brushes?
