I'd never heard of Coates until recently.

Then I saw this:

So when 007 commented on my Grooming Health thread that they had some Coates, my curiosity was aroused.

A pot of Sandalwood arrived today. So it was off for a trial. This stuff is sensational. Apparently the lather was too thick and creamy for the Mach 3 era - it clogged up the blades. It comes into its own for DE and straight shaving. Thick and creamy is how I like my lather so it's perfect for me. Think of the words associated with a fine shaving cream, and they apply here. Cushioning, slick, stable and a delightful scent. This is old stock and it's all there is. So it is a bit dehydrated but that doesn't affect the performance.

It's christmas soon. Treat yourself:

Is that good or bad?

Depends if you're a Vegan.

Although the ingredients of the Coates creams is very similar to the TOBS cream, they are different.

I have used the Sandalwood version of both, and they are different animals.

I read somewhere that Coates contains gelatine ...

That's what I read, and that's why I asked for the ingredients list. The list Fido gives is quite a standard formula. The only non-standard item is the explicit use of myristic acid. Not sure whether that would cause it to have a different performance from other shaving creams though.

i can concur with Fidos original observations.

a very nice thick creamy lather to be had :shave

very subtle scent so don't expect nostrils full of sandalwood.

i used it with my 404 mix but i suspect it'll hog in a chubby or duke, plenty lather for 4 passes at least but then i might have put too much on the brush to start with

at £16 it aint cheap but if your thinking of trying one of the 3 T's this is another one to consider

would i get another if it was still in production, ...mmm probably not as i prefer T&H Grafton scent wise
