Dumb question: is the only difference with a pipe lighter that the flame comes from the side of the lighter as opposed to from the top of it?
I think so. I've just ordered rather a nice Art Deco style pipe lighter which has a side flame. Much easier for pipe-lighting.

I'm very pleased with it. It's quite small, which I think is a good thing, and has a wonderful tactile quality.
All I need now is some butane. Which is odd, because yesterday, in anticipation, I went to the supermarket specifically to buy some. I returned with £105-worth of shopping, and, of course, no butane!
I'm an occasional pipe smoker (and don't otherwise smoke), but I can see this lighter being an EDC item just because it's such a nice thing.

I just recently moved one of these on after it had sat in my wardrobe unused since the mid nineties , it turned out to be not a bad investment
