Blackland Sabre.

A great first shave write up, the waiting for mine to arrive is really frustrating but I'm loving all I've been hearing about it. I just know I'm going to be really happy with it when it does arrive

Thank you Ferrum for a very thorough and informative review. I especially appreciate your comparison comments between the SE-G and the Sabre.
I now understand they shave very differently, but if you were to choose one over the other, which one would it be? Or in other words, now that you have experienced both, would you still buy them both fo their own individual virtues?

That's a Judgement of Solomon!

I like each for its own qualities, not least of which is the different ingenuity with which two designers have tackled the same problem, and I'm pleased that I own both. At the moment, both will get about equal use.

I prefer a slightly longer handle, and although I can use any of my third-party handles on either razor to get that, "out of the box" the Sabre is exactly as I want it. Although it's not terribly significant (to me, anyway), the Sabre blade loading is less liable to any problems caused by manufacturing/crimping variations in the spines on the blades.

Although I've used the Sabre only once, which is totally insufficient to form a complete view, my instinct is that the SE-G gives more of an aggressive feel, which may be down to the OC design. Using new blades from the same batch in each, I'll be shaving half with one and half the other. As I have to look presentable for something this week (to the extent of wearing a suit and tie), I'll aim to conduct that experiment this weekend coming.

I've just picked mine up from the local postal depot after paying my dues. I can not really add anything to what @Ferrum has already said about it, because he described it so well, all I will say is I'm very happy indeed. Guess what I will be shaving with tomorrow! I'm sure I will have more to say once I've had a few shaves with it.

Look forward to your report Paul. Any chance you could tag me?

Day 2 with the Sabre, using Faena Dorica soap and my favourite scratchy Muhle synthetic mock-badger brush.

I thought I would take my time today, and see if I could achieve a clean shave in just one pass. I managed that, except for a couple of the usual places that require a touch-up pass.

As I expected, the Gem blade improved on second use, and I normally find that they stay that way until about six or seven, when their performance deteriorates. I tend to give them a rinse and a good shaking to get the water out, and am following the Blackland recommendation to slack off the handle to allow drying.

It's remarkable how easy achieving the right angle is, and the razor seems to find its own way to it. The balance is perfect for me, and, despite the weight (or maybe, because of it), the razor is very agile.

I should perhaps have said previously that Shane has given some excellent and concise information on how to look after the razor, and some things to look out for, on the Sabre website here https://www.blacklandrazors.com/sabre/. I consider the most important piece of advice is the need to make sure that the handle is correctly started or threaded on to the post. If any resistance is felt, then likely it's not on right, but as I've said before, getting it right isn't difficult.

Did I mention that I like this razor a lot?

My first shave with this beautiful razor did not disappoint, it is everything I hoped it would be .IMO this is the razor the Gem type blade has been crying out for. Well done Shane at Blackland.
I will give a full review once I have had a few more shaves and give you my thoughts but even after only one shave I can not see this razor having any shortcomings. One happy Blademonkey!

It seems to be apparent that is the razor for me...even at this early stage after its release. I just hope someone in the UK or the rest of the EU takes it on board as I don't want the extra charges to bring it from the US.

It's a very good razor.

It would be good to be able to buy it in the EU or UK, but there will still be extra charges.

I bought mine for $185 (about £145) plus $20 shipping to the UK, so the shipping cost was about £15. However, when it hit the UK, I had to pay an additional £45.64. That was £37.64 in VAT and duty, and the £8 Royal Mail fee. Whether from the UK or EU, there will be a VAT charge added at 20%, so there's no way out of that. The importer will have to pay a shipping cost from the USA, which will be passed on, but would probably charge less, or nothing, for the local shipping, and you'd lose the RM £8. As each razor will exceed the dutiable value of £135 ($185 is today about £143), then there will be 2.7% duty.

It's often the case that something from the USA, when sold here, will work out in sterling what it is in dollars at least ie. it seems to be 1=1.

Thanks for the breakdown of costs. It is academic at the moment as none are available, and I have been stocking up on vintage razors. I really want a modern razor and this one seems perfect. I have signed up for a mail alert so I will have time to think about it and be able to act quickly when it reappears.

It shouldn't be too long to wait according to what Shane was saying over on the Shave Nook. A couple of hundred by next week apparently so shouldn't run out too quickly
