Badger Vs Boar

I inadvertently, mostly due to lack of understanding, bought the Boar version of the Vulfix 404 "Grosvenor" thinking they were all mixed boar and badger! It still seems to good in my inexperienced hands but I'm wondering how much better a pure badger brush would be and am tempted with a Simpsons Special?

Mind you it's a PITA that Vulfix don't have more clear numbering/naming system though, how hard would it be for them to have a different number/name for each permutation!

Hi Jeltz,
I thought the 404 was Badger/boar mix and the 404b was badger ? I ordered from Diamond Edge and they only had those two options.(That I could see)

It is a bit confusing!

Here is a pure badger 404 on the Progress Vulfix web site - it has the Grosvenor name - one of the London series. With VAT about £47.

Then at Diamond edge we have:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.diamondedgeltd.com/acatalog/Razors__Shaving_Brushes.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.diamondedgeltd.com/acatalog/ ... ushes.html</a><!-- m -->

Where you will find:

Grosvenor shaving brush £23.50 inc VAT - pure badger

Vulfix 404 £7.77 inc VAT bristle/badger mixture - also bearing the Grosvenor name. This is the brush my review is about!

The further up the price chain you go, as a general rule, the more luxurious and denser the brush you get for your money. You will have a wholly satisfactory shaving experience with a brush you pay £10 for.If you seek sensual and exotic pleasures you can pay as much as you like for a brush. And no two of us will ever agree on just how much a brush is really worth! You pay your money and make your choice. And there's a lot to choose from.

That's what I thought but having looked at my brush it says pure bristle and indeed when I checked the site I bought it from it says the same.

Thanks for the input Fido, I shall probably invest in a pure badge brush, but maybe I'll wait a bit.

Right...there are few different hair types in the 404 family...

The Grosvenor boar/badger 404 mix as recommended on this site is sold by Diamond Edge Ltd only

The pure boar bristle Grosvenor 404 is sold by Connaught.

The Grosvenor 404B is a pure badger brush also sold by Diamond Edge and more expensively by Vulfix.
I did not like this brush and do not recommend it.

Jeltz, I'm sure the pure boar 404 is perfectly fine.

i would think that the Grosvenor part refers to the handle and i agree with Tony about the pure version of the 404, there's better ones to be had.

we need a budget to work to :hungrig

As I said I might wait but up to £30 delivered, would be OK.

consider this then (you'll get loads more suggestions, everyone of then stretching the budget higher  )

this is the 'famous' Crabtree & Evelyn brush on mantics videos.
it's Best hair so better than Pure

beware the sizes though, the most talked about one is the Medium
i found the handle too small
i also had the XL, the handle was a touch too big but way too much badger for my face\liking
so if i was getting another i'd go for the Large but it's your choice

Thanks all, looks a nice brush. I knew I should have said £25 though ;)

Nice brush, it might be on the list but I think I should get more used to the boar one 1st before then I'll be able to see the improvement due to the brush rather than my technique which from today's shave I can see is improving.
