An update on my shaving journey

Thank you all for your kind advice. It has been very helpful and for the first time last night I actually had a comfortable shave. I used the Wilkinson sword blades in the muhle R89. I managed to get a great lather and did 2 passes one with the grain one against the grain. Not a drop of blood in sight. There were a couple of places that were still a little rough but I realise I am still getting used to my beard mapping but overall I was pretty chuffed I used the alum block which stung a little. But I had a little razor burn on my neck my skin gets quite oily which then leads to me getting whiteheads so I am not too keen on using a balm after I shave does any one have any suggestions regarding what I should use once I have shaved. Also my beard seems to be growing faster I have never been one to grow back quickly but I'm noticing a big difference since using the DE.

A good aftershave, brands such as Speick, Proraso and La Toja. Make sure it's has lots of skin conditioning ingredients, and not just fragrance. Other post shave items are Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera.

Although not in Speick, which is my favourite skin calming AS which contains Witch Hazel and previously Potassium Alum. You should look out for the following:

Allantoin
Panthenol
Bisabolol

That stuff works fine, as does the stuff from Superdrug. If you're after a simple balm, mix 60% aloe vera gel and 40% witch hazel or 70/30 if you like it bit thicker; the stuff works very well and is cheap to make.
Excellent I shall give it a go and see what happens! I have tried the cotton wool trick and that was invaluable advice. I had no idea how weird my beard growth is. The wife is also cracking up as she wondered what the hell I was doing :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Do it with a couple of days stubble if you can, gives the cotton wool something to grab and it's worth repeating every once in a while, as we can all easily fall into bad habits and you start thinking how did that weeper get there.

Probably the best advice I can give (after beard mapping) though is don't skimp on the pre-shave prep; my stubble is so coarse I use hand soap and nail brush to soften the bristles pre shave (there's probably a video of that somewhere on the channel).....

My favourite also, I feel it is great for skin repair/nourishment post shave.
In a similar vein, but a little trickier to source is the equally outstanding Pitralon Classic a/s.

Encouraging progress @rafterman ... great advice coming through on potential products. I concur that Speick is a sterling aftershave and especially so after a rough shave. Their soap is really good, too.

Keep everything simple. Good wash beforehand, good lather, take your time and enjoy your shave, good wash off and light splash (not sopping wet) with known-good aftershave. Don't chase that super-smooth that might be causing the irritation and that first flush of claret - it grows back straight away on fellas! ;)

Carry on ...

I'm not saying it's better than anything else previously mentioned (I've yet to try the home made aloe gel/witch hazel mix, but will do). But I've kind of settled on Bio oil as my favourite post shave. A few drops spreads easily, soaks in well, and seems to help any fragrance you may add on top of it to last longer. Seems to help reduce any burn and keeps my skin nice. Although for someone mid 50s I may just be lucky with genetics, I am told I look younger and I'm not going to necessarily ascribe that to bio oil or any product necessarily.
