Aftershave Splashes

Hi Everyone!

For some time now, I have noticed that "traditional" aftershave splashes seem to be getting harder and harder to find in shops. True, there are a few still available, but these tend to be the much cheaper ones, such as Brut, Lynx Africa, and the ones found in M & S stores. It is getting increasingly difficult to find "decent" aftershave splashes, rather than colognes or EDTs, in shops such as Superdrug or Boots. Some specialist stores, such as The Perfume Shop or The Fragrance Shop, don't seem to sell aftershave splashes at all anymore. Could it be that peoples' preferences these days are more for EDTs or colognes? I don't mind EDTs, and in a lot of ways I prefer them, but there is still a special place in my heart for "old fashioned" aftershave splashes. I guess it could be a sign of the times, but I am not really sure.

So...I wondered whether most of you guys prefer EDTs or aftershave splashes, or if you have no real preference? I also wondered if any of you could recommend some "decent" aftershave splashes and if you could tell me which shops they are available in? I don't really want to buy them online, so no websites please. I would also prefer recommendations that are more on the expensive side, as opposed to the cheaper ones that are readily available. I have tried plenty of the cheapo ones. Now, I just fancy a change...

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

CK Obsession ASL is available in shops like Superdrug £18

Blue Stratos can be found in Poundstretcher etc £4

Old Spice is everywhere (supermarkets & discount retailers)

Tabac is on sale at Boyes £7 (mostly Midlands area), and I'm sure some other retailers/independent chemist shops

Quorum is in Home Bargains for about £8

For expensive, look no further than Trumper & TOBS

Dunhill do some good splashes

Another one to look at is Extro Comesi

For me, EdT is for scent, not as an Aftershave.

It depends where you live. If in London, there are several expensive shops. If not, and if you have a good department store nearby, that may have what you're after
I'm in the West Midlands. We have only ever had one department store where I live, and that was Debenhams. Unfortunately, we lost that a few years ago. They used to have a fairly decent fragrances department, but they sold mostly cologne and EDTs. They sold very few (if any) aftershave splashes.

Thank you for that. I already have CK Obsession AS, which I did buy from Superdrug. I have only seen the EDT in other shops.

I'm not very keen on Old Spice, sorry to say. I didn't know that Blue Stratos was still around...

I also have Tabac and Quorum. Unfortunately, we don't have Boyes in the West Midlands. Boots is the only shop where I live that sell Tabac.

Thank you also for your other recommendations. I believe that I have tried a Dunhill EDT before. I'll have to check out the local availability of the others.

Dunhill Fresh is particularly nice, and suits warmer weather - spicy and fresh.

Paco Rabanne, Cool Water, Joop, and 4711 are all worth a look, and are not too pricey.
All available at Boots.
Joop and Cool Water always at a good price in B&M.

Brut comes in a myriad of 'flavours' these days too.

Then there are the many variations of Denim

One of my favourite budget splashes is Lynx Dark Temptation - chocolatey Musk in a bottle, and it lingers for a good few hours

I think there's a general trend towards balms and oils, while aftershaves are seen as something from a former era. For that reason, we're finding more and more that it's the bargain shops that are carrying aftershaves, but the ones they are carrying (comprehensive list above) are the classics, which should never be overlooked and should be in the collection of every shaving enthusiast.

I abhor balms and like to feel dry and powdery after shaving, so aftershave splashes are still my preference and I enjoy the light scent that will compliment my soap choice and attar of the day.

Excluding online purchases means you're unlikely to enjoy (the proper) Clubman aftershaves. Yes, Clubman brand is available at Superdrug but that's the rebrand rather than the legacy branding. That said, you're in the West Midlands so you might pop into an Afro-Caribbean hair and beauty independent and find a bottle of Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum (VIBR). Some branches of Sally's carry it. Alas, Pashana (what an absolute classic) which was also available in such places has been discontinued, but you can still get the hair tonic if you want to enjoy the scent - like Givenchy Gentleman sprayed onto a stray cat!

Otherwise, if you're looking for aftershave to compliment your favourite EDTs ... well, erm, Boots? They'll carry to the EDTs and aftershave splashes in the popular brands. Look in the perfume section, rather than the shaving section. But while in the shaving section, grab a bottle of Brut Splash-On. Department stores, otherwise. I don't get your aversion to buying online. Bricks and mortar shops are dying off and even while they're in their death-throws, they're not carrying extensive ranges. Buy from reputable retailers who come recommended and have good reviews on independent sites. Many of our favourite traditional shaving suppliers are online primarily and most carry a good range of aftershaves.

... and don't believe folks who leave bad reviews on places like All Beauty, claiming they've been sold knock-off weak scents that only last a few minutes when actually, they're reviewing the aftershave (duh!) rather than the EDT they thought that they had bought.

I buy stuff online all the time but for smellies I can understand the desire to catch a whiff at least before parting with the readies.

Mind you I still managed to end up with a bottle of X-Bolt without the benefit of a tester! Lidl Pidl I shall call it.

Thank you for that. It does seem as though a lot of people regard aftershave as a "relic of the past" and something "strictly for old men", so you make a good point there. As I previously mentioned, I prefer colognes and EDTs most of the time, but there will always be a part of me that still loves "old-fashioned" aftershave splashes. That is all we had when I was younger. There were very few EDTs back then. I guess I grew up with aftershave splashes, which could be why I am so fond of them.

Personally, I am not completely averse to online shopping. I just prefer not to. I prefer to walk into a "proper" shop and look around, and then buy things the old-fashioned way. Sometimes, the old ways are still the best. In any case, I would never buy something like aftershave online, mainly because I like to have the opportunity to see what it smells like first, which I am unable to do online. I have never bought an EDT or aftershave without trying it out first. I also think that there is still a place for bricks and mortar shops. I certainly don't think that they are on their "last legs". I think they'll be around for a good while yet. Plus, I like shops, and I think that a world without proper shops would not be a good thing in any way. The thought of a world with only online shopping horrifies me. It is not a world that I am sure that I would want to be a part of. I grew up with shops, as did a lot of other people of my generation. I think a lot of people would miss shops if they were no longer around.

We should treasure and support our shops. That is my opinion, anyway.

Likewise, I grew up in an era when aftershave was a think young fellas splashed on before going out on the pull. As they aged into their Dads, they lost interest but probably did still splash something on every now and again. Overly perfumed chaps were looked upon with considerable suspicion here in parochial West Yorkshire, but on a young fella full of Friday night desire it was okay.

Well, there's still plenty of bricks and mortar shops to buy from ... also, when you go travelling around the country check out whether any of our online shaving specialist retailers also have a walk-in shop.

British Stirling is an option and a classic though chances are you either have it already as it is generally considered to be one of those el-cheapo colognes. I don't wear mine very often but sometimes after a shower just because.

It was exactly the same when I was younger. I wouldn't say that I grew up in a rough place, but it probably wouldn't have been a good idea to be too "highly perfumed" if you were a man. I think that most other kids at my high school would rather have stunk of BO than wore aftershave. Fortunately, I was the exception to that particular rule.

There do still seem to be enough shops that sell decent EDTs (Superdrug, Boots, The Perfume Shop, The Fragrance Shop as examples), but there is still very limited local availability of shops that sell aftershave splashes where I live. As others have suggested, this does seem to depend on where you live, so it does seem to be a bit of a postcode lottery. Fortunately, I do love EDTs and I am more than willing to buy and use them. Maybe that is just as well...
