Acquisitions - November 2024

My latest soap acquisition! I know I am not supposed to buy any more soaps until I reach maximum 10 and then ‘one out, in one’…however I could not miss the opportunity on these ones as they are still the old tallow formula so will be hard to find in the future. One tried this morning, really rich lather however a bit foamy maybe I need to add more water. the other two will probably sell at some point (unless this soap really becomes my favourite who knows…)

Hopefully it'll be ok and not from the dud batch a few years back.

This may not be a relevant acquisition so I understand if this post will be deleted but I picked up a really nice gentleman's... writing set organiser? Three is no description on the box.
It's in absolutely excellent condition, seemingly unused. Possibly missing a pen as there is a loop for one and it has envelopes and an address book.

The box has a tear on a corner but apart from that it's absolutely mint.

I paid £5 in a charity shop.

The Connoisseur brand is one I often see on grooming sets. I can't find much about the company but I imagine it to be dated around the 1950s to 1960s

Check the later posts @Angioino ... we'd got a rudimentary list together.

There is a calendar sheet with the first of the month on every day of the week. After I got it home I picked the calendar sheet where 1st falls on a Friday as that's the case for the current month.

Ah! Okay. Given the Gillette razors I've seen from these guys, I'd agree ... 1950s and 1960s. Pretty sure I've seen Souplex razors in Connoisseur packs as well, certainly PAL.

You want a rabbit-hole to disappear down @NotTheStig?

https://retromash.com/argos/ ... links there to each year catalogue. Check out the Gents "things of the day" for each year ... razors, pens, frag, grooming sets, it's all there. They only go back to the early 1970s, but what a great view on what has the big thing to have that year.

Bill Bailey called it "the laminated book of dreams. Why is it laminated? To catch the tears of joy"

My newly acquired Rockwell 6s arrived today, thanks to being enabled by that darn @Mike Smart and his fabulous S.O.T.D posts and to the seller for getting in touch.

Groomix razor - Arctic Blue
£8.99 from that huge tax dodging river company that I get prime delivery and video from. No longer want to take Mach 3 when travelling so will test this and a Lord L6 I have coming from La Barbiera (£4.79 incl postage!). I got rid of DE Travel razor handles I had (too short for me or a faff to connect up) and travel brush contraption as I’ll take a synth or omega mighty midget (Apols if offensive term!) as will be lighter and more importantly hopefully more enjoyable to use.

Despite a modest number of shaving purchases in the last month most have had issues.

One batch of discontinued blades: refunded by ebay due to seller's mistake after they refused to make good.

A small batch of NOS aftershaves packed badly. One smashed to pieces. I refused delivery as the outside of the box was obviously wet and smelling of said fragrance. Seller's solution? Rebox the broken package, whereupon someone else in the house accepted it unknowingly.

Some more discontinued blades. Parcel has gone missing somewhere in the Royal Fail postal service. Nearly at the qualifying period for seller to start a claim with them.

All these purchases were from unconnected sellers on ebay in the last 30 days.

Perhaps I should take this as a sign from a non-specific deity that I should curtail my shaving purchases for 2025?
Or do I double-down my efforts in an act of wallet-damaging beligerence?
