I recommend going into a good off license / wine merchant and having a chat, on top off the good advice on here. I agree with sipping first and then adding drops of water. The water increases the temperature of the Whisky, which releases oils and flavour.
I used to hate the stuff, absolutely love it now. There is so much choice, I'm sure you will find something you like.
At the moment I'm drinking Tamdhu 12 Yr old (nice sherried, orange and spice) and a Glen Morray 15 Yr old, which is similar - although YMMV.
