What are you reading at the moment?

I’m reading Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons, who I came across with Hyperion and its sequel. It’s highly intriguing and moreish.

A friend recently got me a gift of 1,000 Kindle books. A great assortment.

I have this ready to go:

It’s been a while; and there have been a few books under the bridge. Here’s one that I just finished. Like many of us, I suppose, I find it interesting when authors name check others in their work. Having read a fair bit of Iain Sinclair recently, he references W.G. Sebald on more than one occasion; so I thought I’d give this a go. It took me a bit to get into; but it’s very much a meditation on time, place and memory.

@Scotshave - well resurrected S.

Picked this up in Oxfam recently. There are plenty of 'escape' narratives on this subject but my interest was taken by the author's middle name - Miscavige - her uncle is the leader of the whole 'church' - term applied loosely. I'm about half way through and it's the usual litany of brain washing, child abuse, secrecy and intimidation. Depressing, but the title does at least tell me she makes it out eventually. I loathe Scientology with a passion, so it also counts as 'know your enemy' reading. Take what ever you like from Gnostic thought, a bit of Tibetan Buddhism, Manichean motifs and a big chunk of Zoroastrianism - add some space lizards and get them put in a blender by a shit pulp science-fiction hack - Hubbard. Start selling in a quasi-militaristic fashion and sue the fuck out of anyone that dares to point out that it's dangerous bollocks. Oh, and get some celebrity endorsement. Rant over - I have an interesting John Buchan title I wasn't aware of next. Better for the blood pressure. :) Cheers - I.
