Is it just a question of keeping things in a dry place? If creams and soaps last for months or even years do they deteriorate? Therefore how can we improve chances of survival?
In my experience, most soap doesn't have a use by date so much as a half life. Wool Fat - always the odd man out - is reported to crack and become even more refractory than usual if it's allowed to dry out.

I have "lost" the odd soap in the bottom of my rig bag for upto 6 months - no problem. They were in sealed containers. I also found a half used tube of Proraso that was MIA for over a year - this also worked as per normal.
