I think its just a natural evolution of their finishing process. As the machines & materials they use need to be replaced, they are inevitably upgraded over time. Gillette will make money where ever they can, the DE market is still very large. The UK market is different, but world-wide DE is still the most popular shaving method. The market is very competitive & with LORD, Super-Max, Feather & Wilkinson all vying for more customers if anyone just maintains their quality, they would be in danger of losing market share. Also DE blades are very cheap to make, there may be less margin but its still a good portion of their income.I have done a SxS test and can tell no real difference for the most part, both being top tier. However, to be objective others say the new ones seem smoother, i.e., sharper. One has to ask the question why Gillette would improve an antiquated DE blade when with deteriorating market share their inevitable goal would be to convert people over to more profitable ctg./disposable platforms(?).
