Ingredients I use.

Hi gents.

I've started sharing info about the ingredients I use in my soap on social media, and thought I'd post here too as I didn't want you to miss out:

So I thought I'd do some regular posts about the ingredients that I use in my products. Their benefits, and why I use them etc:

This lovely stuff is Avocado oil. The particular variant I use in my products is cold pressed and unrefined (which results in as much of the nutrients being saved as possible).

It is quite a thick oil and gives a waxy fatty feel to products, which increases their luxurious feeling on the skin.

It penetrates deep into the skin, nourishing it with vitamins A, B and E, amino acids and phospholipid lecithin.

This is one of my favourite oils to use and I try to pack as much as I can into all my products, where possible.

Avocado oil features heavily in both my Shaving Soap and my Body Butter. Check them both out at ospsoap.com

Thank you James, it's great to know exactly what goes into a quality shaving soap, I look forward to seeing your next ingredient. :)

Paul.

2nd post about my ingredients gents:

This beautiful stuff is tallow.

It makes a long lasting, hard soap bar and has some of the best moisturising properties. It's also great at producing a luxuriously creamy lather due to the high stearic acid content!

The tallow in our shaving soap is refined and is the main oil ingredient, unlike most other shaving soap makers!

Interesting tallow fact #1- Contrary to popular belief, tallow doesn't produce any noticeable smell in soap.

Interesting tallow fact #2- Saying the word "Tallow" within 50 feet of a vegan reduces them to tears in seconds.

Ah Tallow, the good stuff!

If that's the case, and I'm not saying you're wrong, what's the fatty animal smell we can sometimes detect in tallow soaps? Is it the result of something else in the process?
I know @James Riley has suggested the shea butter, but possibly more likely that it's the lanolin. We had similar questions about the Hampshire Wool Fat soap (which doesn't have shea butter) that some were alarmed at just how "farmyard" it smelled! I do detect just a little of that in some OSP soaps - Sandalwood, particularly. Perhaps exacerbated through interaction with certain woody scents?

Correct! Mine is beef tallow
You know I'm a grumpy git when it comes to shea butter in shaving soaps, but in yours ... it's really well balanced. I see it's down at the very far end of the ingredients list along with lanolin and so we can say that the excellent post-shave feel is down to the main tallow ingredient and then there's just a little of the top layer emollients to leave behind, likely mostly wiped away with aftershave splash and entirely wiped off with a good post-shave face-turbate!

There's no expected reply here as really, I'm thinking aloud ... but I am (eagerly?) awaiting your take on shea butter when you come to write it.

Sorry, but you'll be disappointed. Shea butter is awesome. When you next order, remind me and I'll send you a sample of my body butter I make. The main oil content is shea and I bet it'll change your mind.

Ah yes. Lanolin does have that smell too. My recipe has 0.3 percent lanolin and 3 percent shea butter in it.
