Horse Strop

How do you know if your strop is horse or cowhide ?.
Obviously im talking secondhand vintage.
I bought a vintage russian leather strop made in USA by Rubin Co. The back of the strop is not what I expected as it is red...the strop side is brown, is the red side useable ?, is it horse? Hmmmm!

Dunno...I have Seen a Lot of Russian Horse Cordovan Shell Strops for Sale... I Personally Dont Use the Back of Any Leather Strop But it Would Appear that Some Do...

Ye couldny use the back of this yin billy, it is hard and kinda like vinyl
