Back to my youth - Fat to fit

I used to be young and very fit. I'm now older, very unfit and carrying too much weight.

A long time ago I used to swim 20 consecutive lengths during my lunch break and still have time to comfortably eat my sandwiches, I also completed a 10 mile fun run in a little over 100 mins.

Nowadays a brisk walk up my stairs dramatically increases my heart rate and leaves me breathing quite hard. I have very little energy or motivation to do the things I used to enjoy and I recently struggled to swim seven lengths with breaks in between.

On Monday this week I started the journey back to a fiitter me with a 15min walk on the treadmill, Tuesday 20mins and yesterday 40mins.
Some research via Youtube introduced me to the "Couch to 5Km" program. Which has inspired me to make some changes, I can't get any younger but I can get some of that fitness back.

As I'm starting from such a poor level of fitness, my plan is to continue with the walking until the end of May and then start an 8-!0 week training plan with a target of doing a 5Km run on or before the 6th Aug. The stretch target is to do it under 30mins.

I have some cheap running shoes and socks on the way, while I get fit enough to run, then I'll be off to the local Runners shop for a "gait analysis" and will invest in the correct running shoes. I also have a fitness tracker type watch on order, so I can monitor my progress and add some science to my training in a bid to maximise my effort.

Way to go....
I love to do a bit of cycling.... Less impact stress on the knees.
Also download the Strava app.... (Or equivalent) and let others friends follow you to give you some thumbs up..... Helps to motivate you.

I heard Strava mention in a few videos. I'll check it out. Thanks

I think the key to getting fit is to find an activity or activities you really enjoy doing. That way you'll keep it up over the long term.

And patience. Your body changes slowly - but it will change.

Another cycling fan here. Jump on a bike and you feel like you're 14 again.

Well Done & fair play to you.
Enjoy the journey & don’t get stressed with it or it will soon become a bind.

The secret to a healthy life is enjoying it.
Good Luck i’ll keep an eye on your updates.

I’m actually in a similar position
i went on a so called diet 2 months ago & iv lost 3.5 stone.
That’s without exercise as iv been flat out at work i haven’t had the chance or should i say iv just not got that motivation yet.
i won’t be hard on myself it’s a bit of both to be fair but i really should make the effort

Congrats on the weight loss.

I don't have any plans at the moment for a diet. I'm hoping that the starting to exercise will be enough.

I'm not overly concerned about my weight, I just want to lose the wobbly bits and get back into some of my old clothes.

For the record though, I'm currently:

18st 8lbs
48" moobs
49.5" round the belly
47" where my waist used to be
47.5 hip/butt area

That's brilliant.... What diet are you following?
I don’t really follow any particular diet
Although i fast for 16 hours per day.
My biggest downfall was crisps,
i could pull in to a petrol station & smash a 6 pack in 10 minutes.
Honestly crisps were getting out of control.
Sounds crazy but the day after i sort of started this diet i was driving past the petrol station & though i’m going in for a multi bag of salt & vinegar Disco’s lol then i remembered the diet and i was genuinely nearly in tears & that’s when the reality kicked in
I genuinely think i was addicted to them if there is such a thing.
Now i try not to eat Bread, Rice, Potatoes stuff like that however i don’t let it ruin my life.
I regularly go for a meal with the wife & i have anything but i don’t do it in the house.
Normally i would have 3 slice of toast most days,
Teo with something on it & i always like one plain piece just with butter.
I will get round to exercise but at this moment my heads not in it,
saying that my job is fairly active

That’s class your actually making the effort i think sometimes getting the head in the game is the hardest part.
I remember hitting over 19 stone a few months ago
today i was 15st 9lb.
It’s actually been very easy.
With me working abroad a lot it can mess with your head & give you zero motivation but i need to get my head around that one

Retiring in mid 2019 and then the lockdown, killed any excercise I was getting. Lounging around at home or in front of the PC became an issue, the only excercise I did was walking to the kettle and back with the occasional trip to the shops.

Well done. Two years ago I stepped on the scales and I was almost 17st. I felt very unhealthy, left knee aching all the time, getting out of breath, and would eat whatever I felt like eating at all times of the day.

Decided I needed to make a change. I'm now at a healthy 11st, in the best shape of my life. The best change I made was starting intermittent fasting, I mainly do 16/8. There is lots of information about it online and there are some useful apps to make it easier to follow. I've recommended it to a few people now and they have had good results.

I also do some cycling and a little resistance training. And have just started doing yoga.

If anyone would be interested in trying intermittent fasting. I could send some links to online information regarding it and tell you what app I personally use.

Kind Regards
Callum

I generally do 2100/1100. I have been reading a bit about longer fasts and may try a 24hr plus fast in the near future.

It’s the 16/8 i basically do but not to strict.
Although i try my best not to eat carbs

I’m not totally not eating carbs but certainly cutting down
No big plates of pasta
No bread although i had toast this morning so i’m not actually cutting it out.
i’m more just cutting down.
Pasta, Rice, Potatoes & Bread i try to have as little as possible.
some mornings i’ll have Cereal.
What i don’t want to do is get to Keto but i guess iv probably been there or there about over the last couple of months.
I did find it quite difficult at the beginning
mainly because i stay in hotels and hotel food isn’t the best when your eating it everyday twice a day.
so i decided to buy my own
As you’ll know in hotels chips come with just about everything where now i might eat the burger but no chips
