Anyone tested making a hanging leather strop?

I am tempted to try and make my own hanging leather strop, but before heading down the basement I would like to ask if anyone out there tested this DIY? Easy peasy? Obstacles? (skipping linen because it may be hard to source)

Have not done so myself but on our Dutch shaving forum several members have and are happy with the results for the most part.

Well, took a shortcut and bought a new hanging strop on an auction site, marked CS, no idea of the quality but I believe hardware is chicago screws so should be possible to swop leather if or when I mess this one up.

Now figuring a paddle strop must be possible to make. A 20x2,5x1 inch plank, shape like a handle one end, add two pieces of leather, one with red paste, the other green, velcro to fasten, keep as backup two more pieces of leather with velcro, plain, a project when autumn comes and workshop calls...

By the way how do I spot if leather is latigo, bridle or whatever leather?

I have made a few, quite a few, hanging strops this year. It's easy enough to do there are leather sales on eBay and I buy 3-inch hemp fabric from the https://www.thehempshop.co.uk/fabrics/webbing-strapping.html. Leather rivets from eBay again, bit of practice with a beveling tool , cheap on Aliexpress and soon you will have loads of strops.

Off shopping for leather tomorrow but first priority after having bought a new hanging strop is making paddle strops to be used with and without cromox.

I found a nice piece of leather in the shop scrap bin for a fiver, enough to cover a couple of strops if I do not screw up. Cutting it in a clean straight line will be the first hurdle! Type of knife? Metal ruler as a guide? Or plank?

That's why I buy from the firm on eBay 1.5m 3inch strip already cut. Bit more expensive maybe, but not if you make a hash of cutting it.

Truth is I have not found any ready made leather strips wider than 60 mm to buy over here in Sweden. Same thing with linen/hemp/canvas so far I have been limited to testing a folded vintage linen towel.

I used the fabric part of a ratchet strap at first, well I still do at times has to be an unused piece of course.
