Worth it?

I bid on this razor on ebay.

I didn't win. Do you think it is worth 60 quid?
(Yes, I know it's worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it but would you pay £60?)

I'm a bit curious about those TTO open combs. I love the long tooth NEWs and was wondering if the TTOs shave like a new. They're very cool and I may pick one up eventually, but I'd like to score a better price than that.

That makes me feel better...

I wouldn't have spent that much on a razor.
The boss would have had a fit if she caught me buying any razors.....

Oh dear .. I was also watching it and had put a much lower snipe in. A few hours before it closed I received this message from the vendor ..

"hi,all the teeth are ok,1 door opens faster than other ,this sometimes wont work and 1 door stays shut, slight loss of plating to handle and 2 small spots on top of doors, cant see anything loose,1 arm on door is slightly bent outwards and side arms are very slightly bent and no flat where they are folded out, hope this helps! sounds worse than it is"

not surprisingly, i deleted my snipe.

There was another one of these (unboxed) that went a day earlier for about £32. I think that one was mechanically sound.

I got something similar which I now know to be an Aristocrat #15. Mine is a mint condition one with no plate loss and silky smooth action. The box is also in perfect condition with the cardboard insert. I paid £40 and I think it was worth is as it is a great shaver but for the condition of the one above I would not have went over £15.

But this is no #15 but a 1930s British Popular

Idiot question - is that better (more desireable / rare) or worse (less desireable / rare)?

Without knowledge of someone like you or MR Razor who knows the subtle differences they are both Gillette open combs to me.

Is it worth the £60?

I have no idea, but I also thought it was a number 15 based on the Patent markings on the razor (according to the original listing) and the following table

Erwin - are you sure its not a #15? Also, there are several in this table marked 'Popular model'. What does that mean??

I see....said the blind man.

Thanks, now you mention it in proportion to the head the handle does look thinner but I would never have picked up on that. You clearly have a trained eye.

I've seen them in real life

That beauty was mine once.

Looks very nice, did you shave with it?

I find the #15 a very nice razor to use although I to be honest my favourite is the #16 I got from you. I keep going back to that one every other week in rotation with the other razors I have.
