Woodsy Essential Oils

Aye, aye, gents!

I'm looking to mix up a few EOs to get that typical, manly woodsy smell. My thoughts turn to pine & cedar but what about patchouli and others? I fear I am in dire need of schooling in this arena. So come ye forth and address this aromatic assailment of mine, to teach and advise in proper perfumery and elevate me to higher echelons of woody wonder!

Matron commands it. ;)

And of course these EOs will be added to suitable carrier oils as I full well know of their undiluted hazards.

Ta muckle.

greetings squire!

i have had a cedar EO and a scots pine - the pine was very similar to tea-tree to me i liked it but didn't get the piney notes i was hoping for. cedar was nice, a heavier oil so just a smidge will do you - i found it more appealing after a few hours. its easy to over do it. the most surprising oil i've used is lavender, i know it's not woody as such but it's herbyness is subtle and manly, despite the old lady connotations. i've been tempted to buy oakmoss EO but it's quite expensive. i wouldn't recommend frankincense or myrrh - i found them too spicey, almost medicinal. The secret must be in the blending, eh?

i suppose as they are generally quite cheap you could buy a few bottles and experiment :)

I'd recommend Balsam Fir and Black Spruce EOs as alternative to Scot's Pine as the formal has slight elements of sweetness and more of that scent I was looking for. Black Spruce isn't too different but still lovely and yes @flip-68 Cedar is really good but I must invest in a good Sandalwood. Success is definitely all in the blending and my skills on that front are sorely lacking.
